Siste et lege. Ego-inscriptions in special locations. The evidence of the pre-Roman Italian languages · The article deals with non-official and spontaneous inscriptions that were scratched or engraved on the walls of various buildings or rocks throughout history and in different cul-
tures. After a review of the definitions of these writing activities provided by studies from other disciplines, the author attempts to provide a framework based on an integrated approach of anthropology of writing, geo-semiotics, and landscape phenomenology, arriving at a definition
of « egotic writings ». Examples drawn from the pre-Roman, modern and contemporary worlds serve as examples of the texts examined.

Denn in allen Konzepten ist dem Begriff Resilienz die Vorstellung von Wandel eingeschrieben, dem über einen längeren Zeitraum verfolgbare Veränderungen zugrunde liegen und der 1 Siehe dazu: MacKinnon/Derickson 2012. 2 Siehe Holling 1973, 14, der Resilienz definiert als »measure of the persistence of systems and of their ability to absorb change and disturbance and still maintain the same relationships between populations and state variables«.

This article examines the names of heroes, mythical figures, and notable historical figures that appeared alongside the names of ordinary people during the Roman period, often preceded by the adjective 'neos' (e.g. 'neos Homer', 'neos Themistocles', 'neos Conon'). These names indicate an elective kinship rather than a blood relationship, linking their bearers to the realms of myth and history.

Geoarchaeological work and excavations of the Helike Project over the last 30 years in the Helike coastal plain, Gulf of Corinth, have yielded abundant evidence on ancient settlements, as well as the surrounding landscape and environmental changes that resulted from geological phenomena and catastrophic events. The research methods applied by the Helike Project followed a multidisciplinary approach, including combined archaeological excavations and palaeoseismological trenching, geophysical prospection, archaeometric, environmental, and soil micromorphology analyses, and computer-based landscape modelling. A wealth of settlement remains that were unearthed across the plain, ranging in date from the Early Helladic period (3rd millennium BC) to the Late Antiquity (5th century AD), indicates that the ancient inhabitants of the area chose to always resettle in the area by adjusting their ways of living to the geomorphology and natural hazards, prevailing each time. Our results show that disasters in the area increased between the Geometric and Roman times due to severe earthquakes that occurred approximately every 300 years. In particular, archaeological and geological finds recovered from the Late Classical-Hellenistic Helike settlement, which was revived in the western part of the plain shortly after the disastrous 373 BC earthquake, have enriched our knowledge regarding the historical seismicity of the region and past human-environment relationships.

This thesis analyses how the 6th-century general Belisarius was commemorated in Byzantine cultural memory through Assmann’s concept of cultural memory, from descriptions of Belisarius’ lifetime until his appearance in the Belisariad-poem in the 14-16th centuries. First, it will explore the genesis of the contemporary notion that the general was a victim of phthonos (‘envy’). Second, it will explain how Belisarius became a relatable figure for later authors’ own times against the historical background of the 10th-12th centuries, which saw renewed Byzantine military activity and innovations in literary expression that both facilitated a renewed interest in the ancient general. Finally, the three editions of the popular Belisariad-poem reveal the use of Belisarius’ memory as a moral didactic figure over the course of the 15th century. The conclusion of this research is that the figure of Belisarius was increasingly commemorated as a timeless multilayered moral character in Byzantine cultural memory.

Taking as a starting point a paper published in the previous issue
of Conimbriga (Fernández Calo, “The Callaeci and the eponymic
issue”), various historiographical aspects are discussed, essentially
based on classical literary sources and Latin epigraphy, concerning
the location, both of the urban center of Cale, mentioned
for the first time in the “Antonine Itinerary”, and of the populus/
ciuitas of the Callaeci, which literary tradition identifies as the
first indigenous community located north of the Douro River that
confronted the Roman consul Decimus Iunius Brutus when he
made a military incursion to the northwest of the peninsula, in
138-137 BC. The triumph of the mission made Brutus to adopt the
honorific cognomen Calaicus, celebrated in several monuments
in Rome. It is concluded that, despite the fact that the study presented
by Fernández Calo has the purpose of renewing the discussion
on a fundamental theme of the Ancient History of the
Northwest, the lack of new sources, namely epigraphic ones, does
not allow significant gains to be achieved in the interpretation of
the available data.

In this paper we study the myth of Philemon and Baucis, narrated by Ovid, and their metamorphosis into two trees united at their roots. Mythemes such as the test of hospitality, the simulated personality, pietas in deos, the reward of the gods and the punishment of impiety follow one after the other in the narrative.

The emergence of a second Senate on the banks of the Bosporus
represents one of the most impactful outcomes of the Constantinian
revolution. In this paper, sources related to the establishment of the
Eastern Senate are reviewed. From this reading it can be deduced
that the Constantinople assembly took on a supra-municipal and
imperial physiognomy as early as the end of Constantine’s reign.
The transfer of the first Western senators to the East can also be
dated to this phase; it was a phenomenon that took place gradually
and not by force of a rule (usually placed just before 357). The last
part of the article focuses on the social shape of the two senates and
the different aftermaths they experienced during the fifth century

The speech Pro Roscio Amerino, delivered by Cicero in 80 BCE, is considered his de facto debut as an orator and an exceptionally successful one. Cicero spoke before quaestio de sicariis et veneficiis in defence of Roscius of Ameria, accused of patricide. Beyond its legal aspects, this speech also served as a political critique of the Sullan state, with subtle yet pointed references to Sulla himself. Employing a wide range of rhetorical devices, Cicero outlined a vision for the reform of the Republic, including calls for the restoration of the rule of law and moral renewal. In particular, he devoted significant attention to the role of the nobilitas, often adopting a critical tone. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of Cicero's critique of the Sullan regime and his proposed framework for the Republic's restoration as expressed in Pro Roscio Amerino.

Dio cassius, when speaking of Trajan before he was an emperor, described the dream he once had predicting his great future and his prudent rule (68.5.1): "Trajan, before he became emperor, had had a dream of the following nature. he thought that an old man in purple-boarded toga and vesture and with a crown upon his head, as the senate is represented in pictures, impressed a seal upon him with a finger ring, first on the left side of his neck and then on the right. When he became emperor, he sent a letter to the senate, written with his own hand in which he declared, among other things, that he would not slay nor disfranchise any good man; and he confirmed this by oaths not only at the time but also later.

In this article, I offer a reading of the pirate in Carl Schmitt inspired by Reinhart Koselleck's study on asymmetric counterconcepts. I argue that the pirate in Schmitt marks a negative asymmetric counterconceptual position associated with a space of exception in relation to which one may also identify the outlaw enemy of humanity. In displacing the political and mapping the pirate's position within Schmitt's conceptual order, the significance of this article's main contribution is to draw attention to a specific asymmetric counterconceptual structuring that marks the limits of 'our' international political world with the dehumanized negativity of its constitutive outsider. Rereading Koselleck's methodological qualification on the structural iterability of asymmetric counterconcepts, the article suggests that the spectre of the pirate lives on, haunting the outer limits of the international and legitimizing abject forms of violence.

Sextus Julius Frontinus, De aquaeductu urbis Romae .
Frontinus's chief work is De aquaeductu, in two books, an official report to the emperor on the state of the aqueducts of Rome. It presents a history and description of the water-supply of Rome, including the laws relating to its use and maintenance. He provides the history, sizes and discharge rates of all of the nine aqueducts of Rome at the time at which he was writing at the turn of the 1st century AD: the Aqua Marcia, Aqua Appia, Aqua Alsietina, Aqua Tepula, Anio Vetus, Anio Novus, Aqua Virgo, Aqua Claudia and Aqua Augusta. Frontinus describes the quality of water delivered by each, mainly depending on their source, be it river, lake, or spring.

Ancient associations had very few extant regulations, but those that have survived indicate a variety of functions, such as outlining the structure of the association; delineating the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of members; and establishing norms of behaviour and consequences for non-compliance. Moreover, by-laws codified procedures for decision-making, dispute resolution, and the amendment of governing regulations. The by-laws of these ancient occupational and religious groups can be compared to modern academic societies and in so doing shed light on one another's practices. In particular, the concern with purpose, membership, finance, meetings, and especially behaviour cross the temporal and cultural divide in ways that allow the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies and other academic societies to think more carefully about how they are constituted and, more importantly, how they might respond to broader societal situations that are not directly in their purview.

In the 2011 issue of Vigiliae Christianae, Mark DelCogliano challenged my attribution of the Homoiousian response to the Dated Creed of summer 359 to Basil of Ancyra. In this article, I confirm Basil’s authorship with new philological and stylistic evidence and compare Basil’s role with that of George of Laodicea, the other main figure of the Homoiousian party, which md considered as the primary author of the document.

Book 12 of Tacitus’ Annals spotlights the ascent of Agrippina, the new wife of Claudius and mother of Nero, to the heights of power in imperial Rome. This paper examines how Tacitus deepens and complicates that characterization through an allusion to Ovid's depiction of Augustus in Tristia Book 2. The allusion, coming in Ann. 12.22 as Agrippina is consolidating her power, serves to cast her as a figure of awesome anger and authority on a par with Augustus himself, but also as lacking the ability Augustus had to put limits on that anger. The allusion thus underscores the Annals’ broader arc of the unruly collapse of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, while at the same time revealing the deftness of the historian of the Julio-Claudians at continuing and complicating the themes of the famed poet of Augustus.

Two inscribed bases of votive offerings to Zeus Larasios from Tralleis (Aydin), dating from the late second or early third century AD, have been repeatedly discussed ever since the first of them was published in the 19th century. The starting point of the discussion has been the fact that the women who dedicated the offerings identify themselves as pallakai (concubines), a sacred function that was hereditary and could be held only once (or in exceptional cases twice) in a lifetime. There is no agreement among scholars on the duties performed by the pallakai every four years, on the occasion of the penteteric festival of Zeus Larasios. The hypothesis that they were sacred prostitutes, put forward by W. Ramsey in 1883, has been abandoned. The proposal of K. Latte to recognize the pallakai as prophetesses (on the model of the Pythia) is also problematic. The explanation of the term pallake or pallakis by ancient lexicographers as a young girl at the beginning of puberty suggests that t...

This contribution aims to resume the analysis of an inscription from the acropolis of Saturo – the sanctuary centre of the Tarantine chora – published in 1997, which mentions the presence of an Athenaion. First, an attempt will be made to evaluate archival data and archaeological evidence to establish whether the inscribed block belongs to the Late Archaic oikos on the summit of the site. Next, a larger section will focus on the meaning of the verb θακέω, as attested in the inscription, in relation to the practice of welcoming supplicants. These procedures will be examined in more detail through an analysis of literary sources, comparisons with other epigraphic documentation, and a survey of specialist literature on the subject. Finally, the text from Saturo – for which a metrical interpretation is proposed – will be considered within the context of the social interactions taking place in the chora of Taranto.
