The present paper demonstrates that Israeli Sign Language (ISL), like most languages of the world, can systematically distinguish between neutral and counterfactual conditionals. Although in the sign language literature only neutral conditionals have been described in detail (Liddell 1980, BakerShenk 1983, Reilly, McIntire and Bellugi 1990, Wilbur 1996), my study shows that Israeli Sign Language is capable of making a distinction between the two types of conditionals. This distinction is expressed by means of a device peculiar to sign language: neutral conditionals are systematically associated with raised brows, and counterfactuals with raised brows together with squinted eyes.
Facial expressions have been compared, in both function and patterning, to intonation in spoken languages (Sandler 1999a,b, Nespor and Sandler 1999). The results of this study provide strong support for this view. Independent facial components marking the two types of conditionals can re-occur in a wide and varied range of constructions in ISL, contributing distinct, albeit general, pragmatic meanings to the overall interpretations of the utterances. In this way as well, they behave very much like tones in intonational systems of spoken languages.

Franz Dotter was a world recognized linguist and sign language scholar. His tragic passing in 2018 deprived the field of sign linguistics from a pioneering voice. In this paper we ask several questions concerning sign language and Dotter's approach to sign linguistics and reflect on Franz Dotter's contributions to the field of sign linguistics. Dotter turned his expertise and analytic skill to questioning the common approach to sign languages which assumed that theories developed to account for spoken language could be simply applied to sign languages. Instead, Dotter insisted on studying sign languages on their own terms. Dotter also was a thoughtful critic of the claim that most characteristic elements of sign languages are fusions of linguistic and non-linguistic elements -a claim which he incorporated into the title of a paper and then resoundingly rejected. As we show, Dotter was an early proponent of cognitive linguistic approaches to sign language analysis. He also was a critical thinker who examined and encouraged others to study the importance of non-manual elements in sign language texts. Always an advocate for sign languages and deaf people, Dotter was active in fighting for Deaf Rights. Finally, we introduce some of the research we have conducted, influenced either directly or indirectly by our interactions with Franz Dotter.

Ancient Maya texts are informationally dominated by hieroglyphic inscriptions and visually dominated by figural art with distinctly formed hands. The hands suggest iconographically embedded hand signs, which would constitute a unique modality of semantic expression and a discourse complement to hieroglyphic writing. However, the hands have eluded decipherment. Here I take a novel approach. I use relevant phonological parameters (handshape, orientation, position) as features for defining a hand form as a graphic symbol. I also exploit inferences of scribal design and composition to constrain possible hand-sign values. Notably, I examine the hand-sign and hieroglyphic inscriptions of Altar Q, an 8th-century sculptural text that is ideal for its relative abundance of graphic hand signs, sizable hieroglyphic inscription, and wealth of contextualizing information. The resulting evidence (including isomorphisms between hand signs and hieroglyphs, intratextual references for hand-sign values, and direct links between hand-sign and hieroglyphic information) converges on a single solution: Each of Altar Q's hand signs is an esoterically formed numeral for one of four Long Count dates. I thus demonstrate and mathematically verify eleven unique numerical hand signs. Although partial, this initial decipherment of Ancient Maya graphic hand signs provides a strong base for future efforts.

Miejsce cmentarzy w turystyce kulturowej-wokół problemu badawczego 1. Streszczenie. Cmentarze i groby od wieków stanowiły cel podróży. Były to jednak różne cele. W ostatnich latach coraz częściej o cmentarzach wspomina się w kontekście turystyki kulturowej. Stanowią one cel podróży o charakterze poznawczym (krajoznawczym), religijnym (pielgrzymkowym), etnicznym (sentymentalnym), a nawet rekreacyjnym. "Proces percepcji przestrzeni (otoczenia podmiotu) obejmuje identyfikację (rozpoznanie, klasyfikację) obiektów, ich strukturyzację (określenie wzajemnych relacji), wartościowanie (postrzeganie wartości użytkowych) i odczuwanie, czyli percepcję przypisywanych znaczeń" (Lisowski 2003). Taką przestrzenią jest m.in. przestrzeń sepulkralna. Za takie należy uznać m.in.: 1.

Onomastics, a field within the humanities, focuses on the study of
proper names. It is closely intertwined with various broader disciplines,
including linguistics, ethnography, philology, history, philosophy,
and others. Names are “special words used to identify a person,
an animal, a place, or a thing, each carrying significance. In many
instances, this significance may be obscured within the name’s history,
while in others, it remains apparent” (Redmonds 2007, IX). One
subfield of onomastics is toponomy, which is the study of place names
in language. Place names, or toponyms, serve as geographical markers
in all languages. They are also artifacts of cultures and languages
intimately tied to the human conceptualization of spaces.

Drawing on Mental Spaces Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory in Cognitive Linguistics, we examine the interaction between speech and co-speech gestures in The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Statistical analysis shows that viewpoint shift in the self-built multimodal corpus, generally following the pattern: Base Space->News Narrative Space(->Base space)->Source Viewpoint Space(+)(->Base space), is significantly related to the use of verbal markers and gestural types. Moreover, multimodal viewpoint shift in political talk shows can achieve such rhetorical functions as enhancing ironic effects, solidifying and highlighting opposing positions, and simplifying political issues. Since verbal markers and gestures can mobilize the audience's embodied experience by primarily activating mental images and motor programs, we claim that mental simulation and perspective taking play a pivotal role in the cognitive processing of multimodal viewpoint shifts by promoting viewpoint alignment between the audience and the host.

The content of this article is a survey of the distribution and functions of the so-called enunciative particles in the Gascon dialect of Occitan. This is a well known topic in romance linguistics and particularly in Occitan studies, but our aim here is to treat the subject from a new perspective, widening the frame in order to include more complex contexts (as for example the different values of the particle se as an introducer of direct and indirect interrogatives), and taking evidentiality as a frame to consider the enunciative que and others like plan, be and ja. Eventually, we ask about the nature of que as it has followed a process of grammaticalization in some varieties of Gascon which apparently has lead it to lose its function as evidentiality marker and to display a purely declarative value; seemingly that function has been taken on by facultative particles as for example be and ja, for which a liaison between their role as modality markers and their adverbial origin is st...

This study investigates whether there is a consistent category of auxiliaries for Tense, Aspect and Modality (TAM) marking or Agreement in Greek Sign Language (GSL). The study deals only with unbound grammatical markers, although, where necessary, bound TAM morphemes are also briefly discussed. These are described and compared with their possible counterparts in other signed and spoken languages, and their characteristics are examined from a cross-linguistic perspective. From the perspective of sign language linguistics, a study of free-signed elements provides additional insight into the linear (i.e. sequential) grammatical properties of GSL. While simultaneous morphological constructions (of a polysynthetic and non-concatenative nature) have been the focus of extensive research, some linear linguistic features of signed languages might need further exploration. Findings from the study indicate that GSL has signs that attach to the verb, similar to auxiliaries in spoken Greek or English. Characteristics of auxiliaries such as systematic use, use across all groups of verbs, and load of semantic content, as they are illustrated in classic studies on cross-linguistic tendencies (Greenberg 1968; Steele 1978), provide the framework needed to identify potential members of a category of auxiliaries in GSL. Research on a wide sample of languages tests the initial claim of a closed category AUX and shows that there is a broader, openended category of functional TAM and Agreement markers, some members of which are finally 'drawn' into a closed class of AUX, often just to move further into grammaticising into free or bound markers (see e.g. the semantic approaches of Bybee (1985); Bybee, Perkins & Pagliuca (1994); Dahl (1984); Heine (1993), among others). Taking these studies as a starting point, I discuss items in GSL that are at different stages in this continuum of grammaticisation, by examining the degree of desemanticisation, decategorisation, phonological reduction, and possible metaphorical shifts. Following an introduction, in the second chapter of the dissertation, I review

This study is designed to analyze the impact of socioeconomic condition, variant teaching methods, learners' attitude, and environment of school in the overall learning of English as a second language in different school types. In countries where English is a second language, the access to English in school has been limited to the upper strata of society while lower strata can only bear the fee of government schools which obstruct the acquisition of second language. Bilingualism is highly associated with the ability to use two language and this research is conducted to investigate the basic differences between teaching strategies, school environment and learners' attitude towards English as second language in different school types. All these factors are considered to address the contrasting ideologies of private schools and government schools which foster or restrict the process of bilingualism. Methodology: This study was designed quantitatively to gather data from 36 participants (12 from each school type i.e., government school, private school and semi government school). Questionnaire contained three sections and were distributed to participants between 20-30 years of age. Two particular teaching methods i.e. Grammar translation method and Communicative language teaching approaches are focused to investigate the impediment in advancement of bilingualism. Findings: Socioeconomic condition of family affects the choice of school where people with strong financial background prefer to admit their children in highly famous English language school. Bilingualism is prioritized in private school where appropriate environment is provided to the learners while other school types do not implement effective strategies which can help students in learning highly prestigious language. Conclusion: English grammar translation method and communicative learning teaching approaches are used differently in public and private schools which formulate different communicative competency of students. Recommendations: Future studies can be conducted to scrutinize the role of other teaching methods such as direct method, audio-lingual method, total physical response, and structural approach in different types of classrooms to assess the learning of English as second language.

Corpus-based contrastive linguistics has rarely been thoroughly explored with regards to cognitive awareness of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Arabic first language (L1) speaking learners. The current study, based on an intervention, quasi-experimental quantitative research design, aims at presenting a pedagogical implementation of learners' awareness driven instructions on contrastive linguistics between English and Arabic languages interchangeably. A purposefully selected sample of 69 beginner level (A1 CEFR) Saudi EFL learners were placed into an experimental group (n = 35) and a control group (n = 34). Learners in the experimental group were exposed to four grammatical contrastive linguistics criteria (between English and Arabic) over a 14-weeks semester duration, and the control group underwent a normal taught course with no intervention over the same teaching duration. Both groups were assessed via purposefully designed, 20-items grammar test before and after the 14-weeks duration. The gathered data was analysed with one sample and independent samples t-tests. The analysis revealed the outperformance of the experimental group compared to the control group in all four grammatical contrastive linguistics criteria. The study concludes with pedagogical implications on the principle of utilising contrastive linguistics as a pedagogical tool in an EFL context.

Social sciences researchers emphasize that new technologies can overcome the limitations of small and homogenous samples. In research on early language development, which often uses parental reports, taking the testing online might be particularly compelling. Due to logistical limitations, previous studies on bilingual children have explored the language development trajectories in general (e.g., by including few and largely set apart timepoints), or focused on small, homogeneous samples. The present study protocol presents a new, on-going study which uses new technologies to collect longitudinal data continuously from parents of multilingual, bilingual, and monolingual children. Our primary aim is to establish the developmental trajectories in Polish-British English and Polish-Norwegian bilingual children and Polish monolingual children aged 0–3 years with the use of mobile and web-based applications. These tools allow parents to report their children’s language development as it p...

While the arbitrariness of the sign has occupied a central space in linguistic theory for a century, counter-evidence to this basic tenet has been mounting. Recent findings from cross-linguistic studies on spoken languages have suggested that, contrary to purely arbitrary distributions of phonological content, languages often exhibit systematic and regular phonological and sub-phonological patterns of form-meaning mappings. To date, studies of distributional tendencies of this kind have not been conducted for signed languages. In an investigation of phoneme distribution in American Sign Language (ASL) and Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras), tokens of the claw-5 handshape were extracted and analyzed for whether the handshape contributed to the overall meaning of the sign. The data suggests that distribution of the claw-5 handshape is not randomly distributed across the lexicon, but clusters around six formmeaning patterns: convex-concave, Unitary-elements, non-compact matter, hand-as-hand, touch, and interlocking. Interestingly, feature-level motivations were uncovered as the source of the mappings These findings are considered within a new cognitive framework to better understand how and why sub-morphemic units develop and maintain motivated form-meaning mappings. The model proposed here, Embodied Cognitive Phonology, builds on cognitive and usage-based approaches but incorporates theories of embodiment to address the source of the claw-5 mappings. Embodied Cognitive Phonology provides a unifying framework for understanding the perceived differences in phonological patterning and organization across the modalities. Both language-internal and languageexternal sources of motivation contribute to the emergence of form-meaning mappings. Arbitrariness is argued to be but one possible outcome from the process of emergence and schematization of phonological content, and exists alongside motivation as a legitimate state of linguistic units of all sizes of complexity. Importantly, because language is dynamic, these states are not fixed, but are in continuous flux, as language users reinvent and reinterpret form and meaning over time.

To my advisor, Sherman Wilcox, thank you for throwing me into the deep end of the Cognitive Grammar pool. It was surely through this baptism by fire that I came to understand and appreciate the utility of cognitive approaches to language. Thank you for loudly disagreeing with me about Langackarian diagrams, in coffee shops, and obliging me to hold my own in theoretical debates. I am a better scholar for it. Phyllis Wilcox, it was your course on metaphor and metonymy in signed languages that started me thinking about the issues that later became my dissertation. Your insight into the interaction of form and meaning in signed languages inspired me to develop a model of phonology which captures the complexity of these relationships in ASL, and by extension showed me the untapped richness of spoken language phonology as well. You and Sherman have been my Albuquerque parents, thank you for welcoming me into your lives with open arms. To Jill Morford, thank you for showing me the 'ins and outs' of being an academic. Your professional, and personal guidance have helped me to strike a balance which I think many in our profession sorely lack. You lead by example, and are a role model for me in so many ways. Thank you for being the ultimate advocate. To Joan Bybee, our conversations about the intersections of signed and spoken language analysis have been instrumental in shaping the way in which I think about phonology/morphology. During my graduate career, "the blue book" was a bible, in that no matter the question that arose, that book would always point me in the right direction. Thank you for holding me to high standards and challenging me to explain myself in a clear and concise manner. To Teenie Matlock, getting to know has been one of the highlights of writing my dissertation. I was so pleased to find out that in addition to your inspiring research on cognitive semantics, you are also such a wonderful person. To my colleagues, Benjamin Anible, Ryan Lepic, and Logan Sutton, thank you for listening, arguing, and diagramming "all the things" with me. I can't imagine how intellectually stunted my graduate career would have been without your challenges and support. Keiko Beers, Susan Brumbaugh, Shelece Easterday, Brittany Fallon, and Laura Hirrel, thank you for being the fierce feminists that you are. Thank you for lifting me up. You will probably never know what your friendships have meant to me. To my parents, Maureen and Lance, without whom I would not be the woman I am today, thank you for encouraging me to splash in puddles and make 'stews' out of leaves, berries and twigs from the backyard. You fostered a curious mind and a love of learning that will no doubt lead me on countless more adventures. To my siblings, Corbin, Molly, Megan, and Morgan, I am cosmically lucky to have you in my life. It amazes me every day how different we all are, and yet how each one of you contribute something amazing to the world in your own way. From the frozen tundra to the semi-arid desert, you have supported me every step of the way. Thank you for believing in me. To the unnamed entities who have impacted my life in various ways over the years, the road has been long and winding, thank you for helping me find my way. For your continued guidance, love, and patience I am eternally grateful. v

Purpose-Using a newly compiled corpus module consisting of utterances from Asian learners during L2 English interviews, this study examined how Asian EFL learners' L1s (Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and Thai), their L2 proficiency levels (A2, B1 low, B1 upper and B2þ) and speech task types (picture descriptions, roleplays and QA-based conversations) affected four aspects of vocabulary usage (number of tokens, standardized type/token ratio, mean word length and mean sentence length). Design/methodology/approach-Four aspects concern speech fluency, lexical richness, lexical complexity and structural complexity, respectively. Findings-Subsequent corpus-based quantitative data analyses revealed that (1) learner/native speaker differences existed during the conversation and roleplay tasks in terms of the number of tokens, type/token ratio and sentence length; (2) an L1 group effect existed in all three task types in terms of the number of tokens and sentence length; (3) an L2 proficiency effect existed in all three task types in terms of the number of tokens, type-token ratio and sentence length; and (4) the usage of high-frequency vocabulary was influenced more strongly by the task type and it was classified into four types: Type A vocabulary for grammar control, Type B vocabulary for speech maintenance, Type C vocabulary for negotiation and persuasion and Type D vocabulary for novice learners. Originality/value-These findings provide clues for better understanding L2 English vocabulary usage among Asian learners during speech.

The paper reveals and describes the causes of communicative failures from a perspective of the intersubjective approach to communication incorporating basic assumptions of psycholinguistics. It introduces a unit of communication analysis called an intersubjective act. It is defined as an inter-action, where verbal/non-verbal communicative actions of addressers are viewed as perceptual stimuli that, coming into the focus of addressees’ attention, trigger parallel conscious/non-conscious inference processes involving cognition, volition, and affect to issue a command of a communicative and/or (immediate or postponed) social action. Inferential analysis applied in the research provides tools for the recreation of communicants’ inferential processes and allows consideration of perceptual, cognitive, affective, and volitional aspects of interaction. Inferential analysis handles American cinema discourse represented by the genre of a situation comedy that models live communication, supply...
