His dissertation, Black Writers of the Thirties, was published by Louisiana State University. Dr. Young has taught history and American Studies at several colleges. In addition to writing official histories, he has produced numerous film documentaries and video briefings, several of which have been broadcast on cable television, at the Air Force Museum, and are and are included in university curricula. Dr. Young has written many articles and book reviews and served as a technical advisor for film documentarians, most recently for the Smithsonian's "Frontiers of Flight" and cable television's "X Planes" series. His latest writings include The USAF

Whether military aircrafts, or commercial aircrafts, their basic properties in common is air conveyance. We regard them as flight vehicles with different kinds of payloads on different purpose. In traditional aircraft design, the technical indicators of basic configurations of the flying platform are adopted as the main issues and criterion. The Platform-External Stores Integrated Design (PESID) proposed in this paper regards the airplane performance indicators of common mission configurations as the main criterion in conceptual design. The PESID idea is an extension of the control configured vehicle (CCV) and integrated avionics, etc. The Flying-Pylon is a highly integrated product of the physical units and software between the load-bearing aircraft and the mounted equipments or sub-aircrafts, which will not only improve the flight performances of the mission system under common mission configuration but also reduce the life-cycle cost of the flight platform by integrated design of...

Profiles Major Juanita Walton, USAF (Retired), the first woman officer to teach history at the USAF Academy (1974-76). Before and after her tour at the Academy, she was an expert in Air Force administration, serving in three wings of the Strategic Air Command and in other assignments, including the Air Component of the ROK-US Combined Forces Command. Her career paralleled the opening of more opportunities for women in the USAF.

A kind of one versus one beyond visual range (BVR) air combat model has been established, which includes functional models of radar, missile and fighter and the process of several combat stages. Air combat effectiveness ratio (ACER) is defined to analyse the result. The 2 k factor design method is used to design combat test case and analyses the influence of three factors (fighter stealth character, missile range and flight height) on ACER. Simulation result reveals that when RCS of one fighter is reduced from 0dBm 2 to-10dBm 2 which cannot remarkably affect the opposition fighter's radar detection distance and missile launch distance, the RCS factor has small influence and the missile range factor has great influence. When RCS of one fighter is reduced from-10dBm 2 to-20dBm 2 , the opposition fighter's radar detection distance will be reduced and lead the result of its missile launch distance be less than its missile range. Compared with the former case, the effect of RCS factor increases and the effect of missile range factor decreases. However, the effect of height is not significant.

The radar has been indisputably the most important sensor in the battlefield, allowing early warning and tracking of air vehicles. Modern fighter ircraft employing AESA fire control radars are able to acquire and track targets at long ranges, in the order of 50 nautical miles or more. However, the proliferation of low observable or stealth technology has contested radar capabilities, reducing their detection / tracking ranges roughly to one third. This degradation is more severe concerning fighter aircraft radars, since most stealth threats are optimised for higher frequency bands, as in the case of fire control radars. Hence, other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum have been reconsidered, such as infrared radiation (IR). Every aircraft is a source of IR, due to fuel combustion, aerodynamic friction and IR reflection. In this way, a jet fighter can be detected by an IR sensor against the cold background of the sky. Therefore, IRST systems have re-emerged, offering an alternative...

The USAF is now past the "post-Cold War" era and is focused on development over the coming decades. The new budget is being well supported by Congress, an encouraging sign for late-decade program funding. Most of the current programs are aimed at long-term - into the new century - with air superiority and control of airspace and Space, as key priorities. For the moment, this effort is focused on the F-22 Raptor, B-2 Spirit, and JSTARS air-warning and control aircraft.
Looming into the near-future will be a new aerial tanker aircraft, to replace KC-135R (KC-135E aircraft at Fairchild AFB, WA., will be replaced immediately), though critics believe it is an unnecessary program, with air utilization during Operational "Desert Storm" significantly lower than was projected.

Reviews the role of pilots and co-pilots, navigators, radio and radar operators, bombardiers, flight engineers, and gunners – considered together, "masters of the air." Reviews the changes in Okinawa and Korea between the war and the present. Compares the generations of those who fought in Korea with those members of the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book looked at all the air operations over Vietnam on one day, portraying not "the parts" but "the whole" of air operations.

PAVE TACK electro-optical target designation system was believed to increase aircraft weapon delivery effectiveness by a magnitude of four, compared to aircraft without the system. The Ford Aerospace PAVE TACK 1,300-lb. pod system was primarily deployed on F-111 E/F Aadvark and F-4D/E Phantom II aircraft, thought it could be accommodated onboard several other strike aircraft. Besides the USAF, the South Korean (ROK) air force ordered the pods under a $50M contract for its F-4E aircraft.

The history of the war in Vietnam and Laos is not complete unless you include the history of Air America. Air America employees were federal employees, but that fact was a closely held secret. Air America aircraft were ubiquitous throughout Vietnam and Laos but at the same time shielded in an elaborate cloak and dagger scheme meant to fool the public. The Federal Government went to great lengths to hide Air America first as mercenaries and later as CIA surrogates. They were neither. Here now is the truth.

The new upgraded design, the J-10B, has several
improved features from airframe modification for better performance, to reduction in RCS and incorporation of new sensors. The J-10B comes with a Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI), which is a slight angled bulge in front of the engine air intake section. e. the radome geometry has been made a little
flat and long with a tilt downwards. This pulls the nose section angle away from 90 degree reducing
the radar reflectivity.

Based on recent reports (T.L. Ramey 1999, J.E. Pike 2000-2004), a large percentage of C-5 aircraft were found not mission capable due to maintenance problems. For example, in one location, no more than eight out of 22 C-5's were mission capable. These maintenance problems reveal the need to improve the utilization of current diagnostic systems. This paper emphasizes such a system, known as the malfunction detection analysis and recording system (MADARS). When fully utilized, the improved MADARS III together with the ground maintenance diagnostics systems greatly enhances the accuracy in identifying faulty components. MADARS uses a digital computer to gather and record data from hundreds of test points during aircraft operations. Some of these test points automatically trigger fault codes to identify faulty components. Many component failures may require further fault isolation where additional test points may be utilized in the troubleshooting process with MADARS III. Data recorded by MADARS is downloaded to a ground processing interface system (GPIS), which makes the data available for local analysis. GPIS also transmits the data to a database server called quick look database (QLD). QLD was developed as a tool for aircraft maintainers to prepare reports based on C-5 flight data files. Test point data may be accessed through the QLD and graphed for visual abnormalities and for comparison with other related test points. This paper discusses the benefits of using these maintenance data reporting tools. These tools can help maintainers identify potentially faulty components early. Some examples of how these tools can be used are provided in this paper. This paper also discusses how troubleshooting efforts on a C-5 may be further improved by including field experience in the decision making process.
