Ikea is a worldwide success story; their stores were visited 915 million times and their website was accessed over 2 billion times in 2016 (Highlights, 2016). As the world’s largest furniture retailer, Ikea services a number of market segments. With significant volume discounts and a vertically integrated supply chain, the production of low-cost goods target young families and low income segments. Conversely, the flagship Stockholm line of furniture entices sophisticated consumers towards mid-priced, superior value products with quality materials such as walnut, bone china, and rustic grain leather.

Nie idzie to jednak w parze z tworzeniem ogólnodostępnych miejsc do odpoczynku, ustawianiem ławek, kreowaniem przyjaznych przestrzeni do nawiązywania relacji społecznych i międzyludzkich. People living in commune have some necessities in public spaces. And urban furnitures became as an answer to these necessities. In history, they have been accepted as a cultural sign where they are using. As an example, Roman was building Victory Gates and sculptures of conquerors to conquests. For another example, classical red telephone boxes of Brits. In spite of being created by self-necessities and aesthetics of each society, urban furnitures replaced with less detailed, low cost mass production products during industrial revolution. Consumers who didn’t discontent with these mass manufacture products, inclined to user - based designed and produced products. This orientation of customers forced producers to take care of design and designers and conduced to beginning of some design trends like Bauhaus. This time period is a breaking point for urban furnitures as other design products. Our study aims to make students using instructional design methods in urban furniture design process.

Movement areas of urban life are roads, parks, squares and city centres. As Lynch (1960) defines, cities have path, edges, districts, landmarks and nodes. These form characteristics enable to find a way and direction in the city, perform urban activities. These urban components provide a permanent visual integrity on urban identity in the mind. The urban components have various functions, scope and visual features such as cityscape, historical pattern, city squares, central business districts, streets, facades, parks, urban furniture, signal elements, sculptures and art elements. Urban furniture include benches, lighting equipments, bins, directive signboards at parks and central areas. Urban furniture make the life at urban outdoors easy and they should be designed considering their visual features harmonising with environment. The aim of this study is to research how urban furniture can harmonize with urban identity and life on the basis of the assignments of the students of department of industrial design. The evaluation will be carried out through project images of design students as a method.

The urban history is a common theme of study, especially since the twentieth century, but is not the same that it happened with the history of public services and, even less, with that of objects which support them and allow them to function: the urban furniture.
The century of Enlightenment and industrialization brought about the systematic installation of these functional objects, necessary for the correct use of the urban spaces and that we know today such as street or urban furniture. Although there were in the ancient city, medieval and Renaissance, acquire from that moment a new role in the city.
The present work talk about those objects from many points of view: history of desing, history of technology, urban planning, public spaces, methodology and conservation on cultural properties.

Small-scale public spaces form an essential part of Barcelona’s urban development. During the beginning of the democratic era, Oriol Bohigas began the reconstruction of the city by creating small-scale public spaces of quality with the purpose of “higienizar el centro y monumentalizar la periferia”. They were applied in all the districts of Barcelona, with the intent of compensating for the loss of open spaces and segregation caused during the dictatorship. Thus, the city gained a series of small public spaces that recovered its urban fabric and provided a better quality of life and coexistence. The means of creating these small-scale public spaces is through the ‘esponjamiento’ of the urban fabric, that involved a selective destruction of specific deteriorated sites and the redevelopment of residual spaces. The study of the historic framework of these operations in Barcelona demonstrates that the creation of small public spaces through ‘esponjamiento’ is attributed to the GATCPAC’s sanitation plan for the old town, and the interventions of Adolf Florensa in the city. This method originated from the concerns of urban hygiene in the 19th century. European industrial cities were suffering from epidemics, overpopulation and insalubrity, and the first measures of urban hygiene were through the ‘eventrement’ of the city, opening it up with large straight axes that crossed though its urban fabric eliminating everything in their path. In Barcelona, the first initiative was by tearing down its walls and expanding into the Plain. Ildefons Cerdà drafted his expansion plan focusing a great deal on hygiene and ventilation and provided the blocks in his grid with small-scale interior courtyards. As for the old town, early measures were taken through the ‘eventrement’ of the old fabric initially proposed by Cerdà and later redeveloped by Àngel Baixeras. Thus, began the opening of the Via Laietana that resulted in the loss of large amounts of historic and monumental buildings. From that moment, the creation of small-scale public spaces through ‘esponjamiento’ was born as an alternative solution to large-scale demolitions and expropriations. And thanks to this procedure Barcelona gained a network of small-scale public spaces that still play an important role in our present day.

This research is an attempt to analyze the existing urban form of outdoor public space of Duhok city and to give proposals for their improvements in terms of urban seating. The aim of this research is to identify the main urban furniture elements and behavior of users of three central parks of Duhok city, recognizing their functionality and the most common errors.
Citizen’s needs, directly related to the physical characteristics of the environment, are categorized in terms of contact with nature. Parks as significant urban environments express their aesthetic preferences, as well as the need for recreation and play. Citizens around the world desire to contact with nature and places where they can socialize, play and practice different activities, but also participate in building their community and feeling the identity of their cities. The study is also aimed to reintegrate these spaces in the wider urban context of the city of Duhok, to develop new functions by designing new seating patterns, more improved urban furniture, and necessary supporting facilities and equipment.
Urban furniture is a product that uses an enormous number of people in public space. It has a high level of wear and damage due to intense use, exposure to sunlight and weather conditions. Iraq has a hot and dry climate characterized by long, warm, dry summers and short, cold winters. The climate is determined by the Iraq location at the crossroads of Arab desert areas and the subtropical humid climate of the Persian Gulf. The second part of this analysis will describe the possibilities of traditional and contemporary materials as well as their advantages in urban furniture production, providing users protection from extreme local climate conditions, but also taking into account solidities and unwelcome consequences, such as vandalism. The main line of research was on how to protect materials used for furniture production, retaining their natural appearance, enriching their properties and preserving over time. Experimental tests were held at CTCOR in order to evaluate the safety, durability, structural adequacy, joinery, and understanding the behavior of materials on extreme conditions.
In addition, this research represents a preliminary stage in the development of IND307 furniture design course for needs of the Department of Interior design, at the American University in Duhok. Based on results obtained in this research, the course would present a symbiosis between people and technology, promotion of new street furniture design that perceives pedestrian activities in an urban setting, and practical use of anthropometric measurements as a tool for technical innovations.

"The quality of the public space is directly related to the facilities and the available elements of use for the development of activities that facilitate the experience of the public environment. Taking into account these considerations, the public space and the elements of collective use, they must offer all the citizens an undifferentiated and social use.
To design public spaces that combine the multiple aspects and needs of a satisfactory and respectful way, it constitutes a constant aim for companies and local administrations.
All the professionals and technicians, companies and users, must interact in order to get common criteria that can improve the product design and the conditioning of the environment. In this respect, the design and development of elements street furniture, under criteria of accessibility, constitutes a decisive factor for the social integration of a great number of persons in the use of the public space. It is also an offer necessary for the generation of competitive spaces and of integration places.
The inclusive design of elements of street furniture constitutes a challenge for the companies simultaneously that a commitment of quality and an advance in the achievement of the general well-being.
This article, summarizes a part of the research project led at the Universitat Politècnica de València with the title Determination of guidelines of design for the urban elements under criteria of accessibility [Primeros Proyectos_ Programa de Incentivo a la Investigación de la UPV]. In this one the principal agents who intervene in the design and development of street furniture have been analyzed together (producing companies, local and normative administrations of application). The aim of this investigation has been to contribute in the knowledge about this kind of products, to increase the sensibility and the relation between these agents and finally, to extract conclusions that could be useful for the improvement of his design and accessibility."

Sustaining participation in design is difficult, especially in neighborhoods that seek change consistent with their cultural values. Participatory Design offers several approaches (e.g. infrastructuring) that help to balance the sensibilities of urban planning with the immediacies of design. This paper investigates the distinctive value of a "constellation" of participatory activities that sustained engagement throughout the design of an urban plaza, combining physical and digital flows. Based on a three-year collaboration in a historically black South LA neighborhood, this study analyzes the re-invention of urban furniture – payphones, bus benches, newspaper boxes, planters, and public displays – into community interactions. After reviewing the concrete vision of this constellation, the City of Los Angeles decided to fund the implementation of a pedestrian plaza. This paper articulates our methods of infrastructuring, providing techniques that sustain participation over time around physical urban objects that become touch points for fluid groups of designers. More than any one design, the constellation approach provides a platform for horizontal iteration, maintaining focus and participation in imagining a neighborhood's socio-technical future.

Any city in the world suffers from density problems. From an urbanistic standpoint these problems are related to a shortage of public spaces and the presence of areas in poor conditions of ventilation and light, filled up with degraded buildings and small residual spaces that are misused or transformed into mere parking.
In this final project I am studying small-scale public interventions as a system or method of urban acupuncture and hygiene that has been applied across the districts of Barcelona tackling important problems related to public spaces.
I am studying the process of restoring, urbanizing and converting these degraded areas, that were occupied by "infected" buildings and deteriorated factories, or remained as left over junctions, into useful public spaces, mainly squares and gardens.
My research is based on the concept of urban acupuncture and hygiene. Just like the Asian medical acupuncture heals and unblocks energy channels in the body so does urban acupuncture in a city. Much like the pressure points on a human body, punctual operations on the urban fabric are chosen to apply urban acupuncture causing by that a ripple effect, what Bohigas called metastasis, that provides the city with a chance to breathe in a new positive energy, render a better image and improve the usage of the new public space. In short, offering the citizens a better quality of life.
All the research is based on the "Barcelona Model", where for the last two centuries, urban projects in every corner of the city were being carried out using the same system of urban acupuncture and hygiene.
As case studies, several small-scale public interventions are selected in the districts of Barcelona, and analyzed according to their history, transformation, design approach, usage, choice of materials, urban furniture and greenery.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Mexico City became the capital of the new Mexican nation. Throughout the century, but especially since 1850, the city was the object of the interest of local and national authorities to make it as an example of a modern city in the American continent, through local contributions and inspirations from other countries which at that time represented the vanguard in urban projects.

The recognition of cities is often provided with symbolic items. These symbols are sometimes chosen from the historical and cultural resources of the place, and sometimes from the natural and human characteristics. In the scope of this study, it was aimed to present the identity of Sille, which has become an important attraction, historical focus and alternate tourism site for the province of Konya, with images, symbols and urban furniture. While Sille city identity is examined, it is
aimed to focus on the historical urban identity of the region. In this context, it was tried to draw attention to the region with its characteristics of possessing a historical legacy and past on “History Told: Sille/Konya” design competitions in the study. In this sense, two competitions were announced in scope of the study under the title of “History Told: Sille/Konya.” Each competitions had own different stages.
When we look at the overall outcome of the competitions, it is clear that Sille's natural and human characteristics are at the foreground, and that each of the products feels natural and cultural values unique to Sille. And it is expected that the analyses that arose under the study will provide useful ideas for the development of Sille urban identity and direct attention to the region.

The ‘urban furniture’ is an ensemble of objects that have evolved through out history, playing an important role to the image of the cities. These objects are representative of the cultural and technological evolution of the societies, therefore they should be constantly replaced, actualised, eliminated or modified according to the demands of progress and functionality that each historical moment imposes.
This fact obliges us to study the most adequate way to intervene on ‘historical contexts’ where the need of conservation of the authentic image presents an alternative between the old and the new. The selection of urban furniture, in this case, has to be subjected to previous studies carried out by specialists, who should offer carefully examined solutions applying ‘contemporary aesthetics’ and techniques and who should also stipulate the indispensable requisites of respect and conservation of the ‘cultural properties’.

The vandalistic behaviors depend on the individuals’ perception and public tolerance; also, the human intolerance and their behavior are the factors which might influence the vandalistic acts. To understand the individuals’ perception of the vandalism issue, it is necessary to get the correct information, reason, and dimension of the act. The purpose of this research is to identify and understand the perception, thoughts, and attitudes of the students from Selçuk University toward the concept of vandalism. According to the questionnaire conducted for this purpose, 82.3% of the participants were reported to have aggressive behaviors against urban elements, and the damage to urban furniture was mostly done by writing (66.2%).

In order to dialog with the theme of this V!RUS journal issue “Weaving the City”, this article intends to discourse – in a free and fun manner – about the city as surplus value and consequently as a class struggle from the experience of the collective production of a parklet, in 2015. This ephemeral street furniture aimed to give support to a possible change in the way people and the city itself relate to the urban center. This parklet was the object of the workshop lectured by Bernardo Neves e Gustavo Tristão during the Second Seminar of UrbanReform “Cidade para Quem?” (City for Whom?), which was a partnership between the Brigadas Populares São João del-Rei and the Junior Enterprise Arché.

The purpose of this study is to put forward parameters believed to have been ignored in the transformation activities carried out in districts of historical and cultural importance, and to make suggestions by emphasizing important points that need to be considered in these activities. Ongoing transformation studies along the old city center of Kemankeş Caddesi in Karaköy have been taken up within the scope of this study. In this context, the historical buildings, most of which are being converted into hotels, and which constitute an important part of the region's history, have been exemplified, and the ramifications this situation has brought upon the region's character have been discussed. In the study's conclusion section, emphasis has been put on important criteria which needs to be considered during the refunctioning activities to be realized in the city's valuable urban parts like Karaköy which shed light on its historical, cultural, as well as its social processes. In this sense, the importance of concepts like cultural wealth and functional diversity is emphasized and should not be dealt with independently from users of such valuable urban parts. The method of this study is comprised of stages of collecting, examining, and from an architectural environmental standpoint, interpreting by observing the necessary data. Preface It is inhabitants that make cities what they are. Cities touch people and vice-versa and thus communication forms between the city and people. The most important phenomenon that deems this communication meaningful is the architecture that features approaches of the past, ideas regarding today and predictions about the future. As it is, the most enduring elements that can be traced of this deep-rooted communication process between people and the

"""Isfahan is one of the most ancient cities of Iran with many monuments dating back to the Safavid era. Hence, making the city’s urban texture conform to its historical ambiance is vital.
Naqsh-e Jahan Square, built during this era, is one of the historical places that attracts many visitors from around the world annually, Mehr News Agency reported.
Le Foa, a famous French tourist, who visited the square in 1877, has written in his travelogue about the square.
“Naqsh-e Jahan Square is the most splendid, beautiful and attractive historical site in the world. It is absolutely clear to me that there is no monument in the world compatible with Naqsh-e Jahan Square. It is not something I only believe in but all architects and engineers also agree with me,” he has written in parts of his travelogue about Iran.
Italian traveler and adventurer, Peter de la Valle, also wrote in his travelogue that Navona Square in Rome is taller and older than Naqsh-e Jahan, but I dare say that I prefer Naqeh-e Jahan Square.
“Beautiful buildings with large doors have surrounded the square. Shops are situated around the square, all of them arranged in rows and enjoy unique decorations, which attract every visitor’s eyes,” he said.
Concerns
While the historical textures are among the assets of every country and must be preserved, new constructions in the vicinity of Iran’s historical sites are causing concern.
Isfahan is not an exception, as modern buildings have mushroomed near its ancient sites."""

Urban spaces which are a necessity of the life of people living in cities, are places where both social and personal needs are met. These places change over time according to the city's climate, physical structure and socio-cultural and socio-economic structure of the citizens. In order to meet the increasing needs of the citizens with the effect of urbanization in urban spaces, there are various elements called urban furniture. These elements are shaped according to the social and physical structure of the city. The needs of the citizens change according to effects such as climate, culture, physical structure, economy and different geography. As a climatic effect, harsh weather conditions such as snow, wind, ice, frost, prolonged cold and decreasing daylight in cities where the winter season is predominantly felt restrict the use of urban spaces and the access of the citizens to these spaces. In these places the use of qualified urban space and access to urban furniture are important. However, urban spaces and urban furniture that are not designed in accordance with winter climate conditions lose their accessibility. In this study, the design criteria of urban spaces and urban furniture in winter cities with harsh winter climate conditions were examined. In addition to this, examples from world cities regarding the usage levels of urban space and urban furniture are discussed. The examination was carried out within the extent of the design criteria that should be applied in winter cities. By examining the examples in world cities such as Trondheim, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Bakklandet, Ottawa, Vancouver, Bracebridge, Quebec, Denver, Harbin, Washington, conclusions were made about the optimal use of urban furniture in winter cities. The study was prepared within the extent of the completed master thesis titled " Aesthetic and Functional Evaluation of Urban Furniture within the context of Winter Cities; the Case of Erzurum City Center ".

In this dissertation, we intend to make known the public bank. This will be presented with the help of an in-depth survey of street furniture and the various benches that have sprung up over time, as well as the context of the emergence of the bank as a constituent element of the city in order to understand its influence and importance. in the social life of citizens.

Vandalism is a phenomenon that we can encounter in any circumstances to public or private property. The vandalistic behaviors depend on the individuals' perception and public tolerance; also the human intolerance and their behavior are the factors which might influence the vandalistic acts. To understand the individuals' perception of the vandalism issue, it is necessary to get the correct information, reason, and dimension of the act. The survey-research revealed that gender, which mostly involved in vandalism are males. Also, the timing of vandalism is observed at 21:00 (49%). The rate of those participants who said that they harmed the urban furniture is 15.6%, consciously stated that they had damaged the picnic table (55.1%) by writing or drawing (40%), and they had done it because the urban furniture was already vandalized (44.6%). This study will provide guidance on solutions by finding the causes and types of vandalism acts on urban furniture, which is a serious but not undetected problem in university campuses. The research indicated that people perceived vandalism as a lack of consciousness, sanction, and quality of the material and affects the quality of life. While, if enough people are aware of the problem, then the incident rate will decline, simultaneously.
