Introduction The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of aspects of urban social change by orientating the analysis around a grassroots-level focus . Specifically, bottomup experiences of and responses to some of the contradictions of Dublin's new-town experiment arc explored . highlighting both critical perspectives on the limits of this experiment in peripheral urban expansion and efforts to find alternative , independent solutions through bottom-up development practices. The paper first provides some contextual material in an overview of a larger research programme from which the discussion draws. It then examines some community perspectives on the problems of new-town planning as it was implemented in Tallaght on the western periphery of Dublin, drawing on qualitative analysis of interview data in order to gain some insight from the level of everyday life. The final section focuses on efforts to explore and implement alternatives through autonomous local d...

The objective is to discern strategic priorities and glean insights from Baluch women in Zabol regarding the criteria guiding the selection of dress types and overall decision-making processes pertaining to the cultural aspects of women's attire, through a comparative analysis of the past and present. The central research question is formulated as follows: What constitute the most important selection criteria for Baluch women's dresses in Sistan, with a focus on ancient background and cultural identity? The research methodology employed is descriptive-analytical, relying on documentary, library studies, and field surveys. Additionally, the analysis utilized the Analytic Network Process (ANP) model, breaking down the data into 3 clusters (groups) and 9 subgroups (nodes). The findings reveal that, in the analysis of Baluch women's dresses, the node "Compatible with traditional culture" (0.708) within the "Preference of Baluch Women in Zabol City" cluster, the node "Stemming from neighboring lands" (0.668) within the "Traditional Attire" cluster, and the node "Adhering to Sistan traditional culture" (0.525) within the "Modern Attire" cluster, have been assigned higher priority compared to alternative options. These results hold significance for decision-makers, planners, and officials involved in cultural matters, providing valuable insights for prioritizing strategies concerning women's dresses. Implementing these insights can contribute to the preservation and safeguarding of Iran's indigenous and traditional culture.

The role of social cohesion in the making of the kind of metropolitan heterogeneity that is essential for inter-ethnic affinity in the 21 st-century Nigeria is one aspect of the postcivil war narrative that is yet to receive adequate scholarly attention. This is because; the internecine war between 1967 and 1970 did unimaginable damage to intergroup relations in the country, hence the need to rekindle this intergroup affinity in the post-civil war years. The country's independence in 1960 strengthened an existing bond between the Nigerian groups, whichwas strongly bolstered by the migration of Nigerian peoples from one city to another, for work, trade, and other purposes. Unfortunately, the January 15 coup d'état altered the nature of things. The pogrom that followed that controversial military exercise endangered intergroup relations by attacking heterogeneity which has been the beauty of urban settlement in Nigeria since the precolonial epoch. The research adopts the historical and interpretative research methodology. My writing sources include oral interviews, related discography and YouTube video documentaries. Also, published books, chapters in books and articles in journals, newspapers collected from public libraries, and unpublished theseswere also handy. The study underscores the ripple effect the civil war had on intergroup relations by revealing that adequate attention has not been given to fostering social cohesionand peaceful coexistence. The study concludes by encouraging the government to redirect attention to engendering social cohesion in Nigeria, especially in Lagos.

Petitions can be considered one of the most important historical documents closely linked to the political and social life of society, representing the concerns and problems of a society that generally had to write petitions after its demands were not resolved through official channels. The present article was written with the aim of understanding the concerns and urban problems of Kermanshah during the constitutional era and is based on petition documents. This research utilized the content analysis method to read and examine the petitions from this period and to answer the question of what problems the people as a lower class in this period demanded from the higher authorities to solve through petitions and solved? The results of studying the demands of the urban society of Kermanshah at three historical points in this period show that the above-mentioned demands fluctuated in the form of four main categories: social, political, economic, and cultural, in conjunction with the developments. While in the first and second constitutional periods and the First World War, the political sphere of demands was at the top, in the third period with a fundamental shift and a significant decrease in political demands, the social category with a variety of issues and a high volume of petitions is at the top of the table of these demands, and the cultural category with an upward movement has been in the second row of the table. From an economic point of view, we also see a uniform trend of such demands in all three periods, which were made above all in relation to the tax system.

proliferation of neighborhood gangs. This area of inquiry, gaining prominence due to the escalating number of studies on neighborhood gangs — which have seen a marked increase in many sectors of Algerian society — has experienced a significant surge, engendering fear, panic, and social instability. Scholars have linked these phenomena to a confluence of psychological, social, economic, and media-related factors. The latter, in particular, have garnered considerable attention, underscoring the need to evaluate both their positive and negative ramifications, especially their impact on Algerian urban youth. This demographic is deemed most susceptible to the hazards of social maladies, as substantiated by a plethora of studies and research. The present study endeavors to illuminate the pivotal role of media, across its diverse platforms, in mitigating the expansion of neighborhood gangs and its consequent effects on Algerian youth. It undertakes an analysis from two distinct vantage points: - The media's influence in facilitating the spread of neighborhood gangs within Algerian society - The media's potential in countering the emergence and growth of neighborhood gangs in Algerian society.

This paper discusses the pre-colonial political system that was practiced in Umuchu long before the advent of British-imposed hegemony. It focuses on a system that was destroyed with machinelike difference by British colonialism and the inherent lessons a state like Nigeria can learn from it; as it continues to search for a suitable political system favourable to all its ethnic components. The paper brings to fore Umuchu's unique pre-colonial political system that was not only inspired by internal necessity, but achieved remarkable success before being viciously undermined by colonialism. This theme struck a popular sentiment that reverberates across the length and breadth of Nigeria. It assesses an indigenous political system that has rarely received the attention and interest of scholars. In studying this defunct but highly significant political system, the paper uses both primary and secondary sources and employs historical methods of analysis. This paper finds that Nigeria's perennial search and dismay for failing to develop a favourable political system is an inevitable consequence of its refusal to jettison the practice of copying successful political systems that are not compatible with its socio-political environment. More so, diversity does not almost always pose a problem when it is properly managed and there is justice and equality, and every part of the country is seen to be treated fairly and justly. It recommends that an approach to the issue of finding suitable socio-political system must be undertaken which reflects the unique characteristics of Nigerians as the only panacea to peace, security, and progress.

Funded by HSC R&D Division, Public Health Agency Why did we start? Most people who complete suicide are in contact with their family doctors or other services in the months prior to death. A better understanding of the nature of these contacts and the various pathways experienced by suicidal people should reveal the gaps and barriers to effective service provision. We also need better information about the difficulties experienced by family carers, both prior to the death and afterwards. Of particular interest to policy makers in Northern Ireland was a concern that people from rural areas may be at increasing risk of suicide. We were commissioned by the Health and Social Care R&D Division of the Northern Ireland Public Health Agency to address the gaps in our understanding of suicide in NI. What did we do? The Sistan sedimentary plain has been the habitat of various human communities in the past due to its favorable environmental conditions. Therefore there are many ancient hills and historical monuments in this area. Although this area is one of the important and rich ancient areas in East Iran, there are still many issues and uncertainties about the history of this area, and each of the existing works can answer many of these questions. Therefore, protecting such works against natural and human destructive factors is inevitable. The archaeological survey of the Zahedan-Zabol gas transmission route was carried out to identify the ancient sites on this route and protect them against any damage and destruction. Along the route designed to install the gas pipe, there are many ancient sites and important historical centers such as Shileh, Ramroud, Roud-Biaban, and Shahr-i Sokhta. This survey was conducted with an intensive and step-by-step method to identify and investigate all the sites of this important cultural area and thereby protect them from possible future dangers. In sum, 38 ancient sites and mounds were identified, and surface movable and immovable works, belonging to prehistoric, historical, and Islamic eras, were collected and documented. These cultural materials included 322 pieces of pottery and 157 index objects, all of which were categorized and studied. In this article, the authors try to provide a brief report of this study along with a description of the findings and results.

Because of the plagues that tormented Rome during the Jubilee Year of
1475, Moldavia’s main harbour, Cetatea Albă, was transformed – alike Bologna – into an “alternative pilgrimage site” by Pope Sixtus IV, eager to promote the recent victories of Stephen III of Moldavia, Christendom’s Greek rite athlete (certainly since April 1476), against Sultan Mehmed II.. In the name of the anti -Ottoman crusade, the Papal bulla Redemptor Noster (January 1476) stipulated that the pilgrims had to visit the two cathedral churches of Cetatea Albă (duas ecclesias cathedrales), an uncanonical “rarity”, encountered semi -officially at the inner borders of the Latin rite world, in Bergamo or in Dublin (nevertheless in both cases the designation cathedral did not cover two distinct Episcopal seats / bishoprics). The identity of one of the two cathedrals mentioned by Sixtus IV is obvious: the seat of the Latin rite bishop of Mocastro, whose titular prelate, probably named Stephen, then served as Stephen III’s envoy to Ita ly in the spring of 1476. The identity of the other cathedral is probalmatic. The bishopric of Asprokastron (another designation for Cetatea Albă) was used – in quite dubious manner – by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to legitimize the Metropolitanate of Moldavia (1401) and consequently the Greek rite rule of the voivodes of Moldavia. Nonetheless, the individuality – both Latin and Greek – of Cetatea Albă had caused major problems for the rulers of Moldavia, chiefly during the domestic conflicts of the 1430s–1450s, which left a profound impact on Stephen III’s rule. By recalling the Greek rite as – well – individuality of Cetatea Albă, Pope Sixtus IV, who placed the cathedrals at the Dniestr Mounds second only in entire Christendom to those in the Holy Land and in Compostela, risked to antagonize Stephen III, Venice’s favourite, growingly nervous because of the lack of substantial Roman financial and monarchic support. An alternative identification of the second cathedral can therefore be voiced. The cathedral could have belonged to the Armenians, already a major target for the Papacy, both in the Mediterranean and in the Black Sea area. Contemporary sources list the Armenians of Moldavia as both loyal to Stephen III and in control of a sizeable part of Cetatea Albă and its hinterland. Moreover, in the summer of 1476, the Armenians fought alongside the Wallachian troops of Stephen III against the armies of Mehmed II, who once again also attacked Cetatea Albă, the main Pontic target of the Porte a fter the Ottoman conquest of Crimean Caffa in mid-1475. At that time (1475–1476), because of his matrimonial ties (his wife was – since 1472 – Mary of Crimean Theodoro) and because of the Central-European and Balkan interests of his suzerain, King Matthias Corvinus, Stephen of Moldavia’s main aims seem to have been focused precisely on the Black Sea area, where the Armenians could have been and were most useful, especially after the victory of Mehmed II over the Turkmen khan Usun Hassan (1473). Considering these, as well as other elements (related for – instance – to the apparently highly loyal, pro-Stephen III, conduct of the Armenians during the eventually fatal Ottoman siege of Cetatea Albă in 1484), the relation between Stephen III and the Armenians (a relation that almost collapsed in 1479, because of the divergent attitude of the parties towards the recently concluded Ottoman-Venetian peace) justifies the hypothesis that the second cathedral of Cetatea Albă, mentioned by Pope Sixtus IV in 1476, actually belonged to the Armenians and not to the Greek rite Christians.

I. Cuza" din Iaşi, fiind admis printre primii.

One of the most controversial laws promulgated by the National Party as part of South Africa's mid-twentieth century apartheid policies was the 1949 Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act. This Act stipulated that 'a marriage between a European and non-European may not be solemnized, and any such marriage solemnized in contravention of the provisions of this section shall be void and of null effect'. We use more than 23,000 newly-transcribed Anglican marriage records of Cape Town for the period 1911 to 1964 to show that the Act had mostly followed, and not led, changing interracial marriage practices. In the years before the Act's promulgation, interracial marriages were rare and on the decline, despite the fact that apartheid-era policies had not yet been institutionalized. Our results suggests that marriage behaviour in Cape Town, and probably in South Africa more generally, was shaped by racial stratification early in the twentieth century. The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act of 1949, although devastating to those affected, was a correlate to rather than the cause of changing marriage behaviour.

This article analyzes the increasing spread of male-to-female harassment on the streets of Cairo. The aim is to first describe, define and contextualize street harassment as a social phenomenon and secondly to suggest some main social factors that provoked the development of the problem in the first place. This analysis takes a particular look at the correlation between street harassment and decades of structural and institutional changes which have had an impact on patriarchy as a defining system for the relationship between men and women. Historically in Egypt, patriarchy was not only fundamental for spatial and gendered organization within the private family sphere, but also for demarcating movement and participation in the public domain. In recent decades, high unemployment rates among men have undermined the conditions for upholding the patriarchal structure. This article argues that street harassment is symptomatic of high unemployment rates and of a consequentially weakening patriarchal system. It identifies the everyday spectacle of male-to-female street harassment as indicative of the frustration and difficulties in adhering to cultural ideals in a time of immense structural transformations. These transformations have impaired Egyptian males' ability to fulfil their traditional role as economic providers, something which has resulted in their lack of achievement and demasculinization.

The systematic archaeological research at the "Princely Court of Târgovişte", from 2020-2022, an approach anchored in the continuity of previous research, revealed, in terms of archaeological complexes, notable results. The most important archaeological complex highlighted is represented by the lower part of a dwelling, a stone cellar of appreciable dimensions. This building, situated in the immediate vicinity of the church of St. Parascheva (also known as St. Vineri), formed, during its existence, a residential, and, possibly, an official complex. Archaeologically, the church was dated towards the middle of the 15th century, and several architectural elements and decorations, such as the triconch plan, the external friezes, or the glazed ceramic ornaments, come to secure this dating. The period of existence of the discovered dwelling was placed in the 15th-16th century, therefore establishing a degree of contemporaneity with the church, the two buildings forming, most likely, a unitary complex. The original owner of this residential complex remains yet unknown, but whose influence, regardless of his position held in the council, manifested in the service of the central authority. The objects recovered from inside the cellar, from those used in construction, such as stone, brick, polychrome tile, stone-carved frames, tiles, and up to a monetary inventory, highly suggestive for establishing the chronology of the entire complex, led us to opine that, starting from the middle of the 15th century and until the end of the 16th century, it is very likely that a boyar residence functioned in this space, a sustainable status, especially during the life of the influential boyar, Manea Perşanu. The presence of a fortification, with a palisade, a defence ditch and, probably, a ground defence wall, which would close, to the west, the entire mansion-church complex, remains one of the challenges of current and future research. Referring to the contributions of the archaeology of the extra-Carpathian medieval city, we could consider these discoveries as an important step, both for the Târgovişte's history, and for the systematic research of an urban nobleman residence, characterized by a mansion, a church, and an enclosure.

This chapter delves into the correspondence between the tenth labour of Hercules and the named stretches of road in southern Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula, which was part of a process of monumentalizing these landscapes. It pays particular attention to the fact that this monumentalization and the Herculean myth both particularly focused on (expressing) control over the landscape. Because in name and image Augustus was an emphatic part of the Roman monumentalization, the princeps gained a Herculean aura almost by default. By means of examining this association, this chapter shows the importance of landscape-bound traditions in the ideological impact of road-building projects, a much underemphasized aspect of the study of Roman infrastructure. This focus offers us glimpses into how such traditions gave the emerging Augustan Principate ample opportunity to assert changing power relations at both a local and a supralocal level. It is shown that this process involved a degree of negotiation, with local actors also having a share in shaping the discourse.

The central theme of our research concerns the terms used to define the identity of great boyar families, both ethnic and religious, in the 18 century. We consider the great local boyar families both those who were rooted in Moldavia (as far back as classic Middle Ages) as well as those who became local during the 17-18 centuries and had Greek origins. According to sources, terms like pământean, moldovean, român, rumân, grec, fanariot, țarigrădean, levantin, insular (native, moldavian, romanian, greek, fanariot, levantin, constantinopolitan, insular), but also creștin, drept credincios, ortodox (christian, true believer, orthodox) have been frequently used. These terms generated confusion within historical research and fuelled two interpretation trends somehow contrasting. The one sustained by the researchers of the Middle Ages insisted on the importance of religious identity, including the Moldavians in the orthodox Christianity and favoring the integration of the Phanariots settle...

This article focuses on an essential and little-known aspect of the urban history of Craiova. Specifically, it is one of the important landmarks of its historical topography, whose evolution has known three stages: one represented by the Gănescu church, the other by the Palace of Justice, and the third by the University of Craiova (the last two stages being related to the same building which has changed its destination). Our text is dedicated to the analysis of the first stage that helps us understand the importance of the place, its connection with local urban history, the history of its local elites of the eighteenth century, but also with the history of other important institutions essential for the nineteenth century (the Bishopric of Râmnic). We were interested in the different historical brands that characterized the evolution of this place, important not only for the history of Ulița Episcopiei/Alexandru Ioan Cuza street. We have considered the various significant historical elements, including the local community, whose urban development has inevitably left its mark on place changes. Although its centrality has remained unchanged, its historical form has changed following a temporality that forced the abandonment of the church of an old boyar family, an episcopal residence, in favour of a modern institution, according to an urban plan that gave a modern face to Craiova of the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. As in other cases in Romanian urban history, after the physical disappearance of the building, the old toponyms of the eighteenth century, "Biserica Gănescu", "Mânăstirea Episcopiei" hardly or not at all survived in the collective memory, the first being recovered and publicly remembered today by a commemorative plaque on the wall of the current university.

Problem Definition: Carpet motifs, like other motifs, are full of mystery, structural complexity, and symbolic meanings. Some of these motifs have changed over time, and some of them have survived in climate, culture, or societies with a specific culture throughout history and are still connected to their origins. According to what has been said, the reason for the permanence and continuity of these motifs during historical periods in various contexts is a question that will be answered by a case study of nomadic carpets in Bahram Gur of Neyriz and Qashqai regions in Fars province. Objective: This research aims to recognize the reasons for the continuity of nomadic carpet patterns in different historical periods. Research Method: The approach of this research is qualitative, and its findings are presented in a historical analytical way using library and field sources as well as visual evidence. Results: Social and lifestyle alterations are one influential factor in artistic changes. Despite the independence of nomadic communities from urban communities for many centuries, the need of urban societies for nomadic carpets has caused occasional interference in the motifs of some nomadic carpets throughout history. The other reason for motif alterations has been various exchanges and communication or cultural encounters; however, the stability of the material facilities and no change in the lifestyle of the nomadic community over many centuries has caused some of the carpet motifs of the nomadic community to be more stable throughout the historical periods.

Aim of the study is to analyse the importance of marriage in the Germanic world, generally speaking, and in the Germanic barbarian states, exceptionally speaking. In order to highlight the features of the institution of marriage, I have used the texts of the barbaric laws of the Burgundians, Franks, Longobards and Visigoths as my primary source. Apart from archaeological discoveries, these legislative codes are the most important historical source for the period between the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the formation of the Germanic kingdoms, and represent a historical legacy of the Old Germanic world. In this paper we aim to point out the relationships between social/marital actors, legal guardian, husband, wife, regulated by the Germanic legislative codes, instruments of the central power. At the same time, we will touch on issues such as betrothal, bride price, marriage, forbidden marriages, divorce, repudiation, remarriage, adultery, etc., and the legal framework that sets and imposes certain limits. At the same time, we will try to outline, by analysing the laws, the ideal marriage, but also the potential loopholes or situations that deviate from legal and moral norms.

Cape Town In 1875 was the capital of Britain's Cape Colony. Located on the Cape Peninsula, by the • shores of Table Bay, 1 this small town of 33 000 people was contained within a natural amphitheatre of approximately six and a half square miles formed and dominated by Table Mountain and Signal Hill. In the sixteenth century the Table Bay area, relatively flat and well watered, had been a place of barter between the Peninsula's Kholsan inhabitants and crews of ships passing between Europe and 2 the East Indies. In establishing a settlement at the Bay in 1652 the directors of the Dutch East India Company were primarily 3 concerned, it would seem, to maintain the status quo ante. The settlers' and Khoisan's failure to achieve this aim has been well documented and led to the inexorable growth of a Dutch colony at the Cape, complete with imported slaves as well as subjugated 4 Khoisan. In this process the settlement in Table Valley, Cape Town, continued to serve first and foremost as a trading centre between land and sea; between hinterland and port, port and passing ships. The extent of such trade underpinned the economic and demographic fortunes of the town. Demographic expansion in turn increased opportunities for retail trade and manufacture for local consumption. But the town's economy also drew nourishment from Cape Town's further roles as administrative capital and military headquarters, and the concomitant expenditure. Such nourishment, and indeed the extent of exchange, remained meagre before the nineteenth century, meagre while the Cape Colony was 5 under the control of the monopolistic D.E.I.C. Under the British the Cape was for the first time, brought within the ambit of a powerful industrialising economy. The British had both the inclination and the ability to change the nature and capacity of colonial production, with the consequent implications for the accumulation of capital and urbanisation in her new colony. Khoisan labour, under the Dutch reduced to serf status, was liberated, mobilised and made responsive to market forces by 1828. Slavery was abolished in 1834 and the ex-slave apprentices 6 freed four years later. Yet for economic growth, for the growth of Cape Town and other places of exchange to take place, there needed to be more than a transformation in conditions of production at the Cape. The Cape had still to find the product or products that the world market required. One such product seemed, by the 1840's, to be wool. The rapid rise of British demand for wool took place between 1840 and 1870. With it came a rise in the price of that commodity. Cape merchants and farmers responded by concentrating their attention 7 on the possibilitis of maximising this new source of profit. One problem, from Cape Town's point of view, was that Port Elizabeth and East London, founded by the British, had developed as rivals in competing for expanding agricultural output. Geographical determinism should have ensured that Cape Town was eclipsed as the Midlands and Eastern Cape became the heartlands of wool production, the logical hinterlands of the other two ports. Indeed logic seemed to be winning the day as Port Elizabeth's exports, chiefly wool, took premier position over 8 those of any other Cape port in 1854. Despite this challenge Cape Town retained its commercial pre-eminence in the late nineteenth century. This was partly made possible by the town's function as seat of government. This put Cape Town's mercantile elite [organised since 1822 in a commercial exchange], at something of an advantage when competing for the favours of the colonial state. Representative government, granted in 1S63, accentuated the advantage by giving the Western Cape, and thus Cape Town, a majority in the legislature. Competition between East London and Port Elizabeth merchants only led to their greater mutual inability to counter dominant Western interests, a factor still very much alive after responsible government in 1872 had effectively diffused a simple East versus West divide. So it was Cape Town that secured government money, in part gleaned from Port Elizabeth's enlarged custom, to build a proper harbour between I860 and 1870 and continued to attract large sums on further Improvements until the severe depression of the 9 1900's. With Cape Town remaining the first potential Cape port of call for ships on their way from Europe, such expenditure and such facilities gave the economy of the town a sound foundation in the late nineteenth century as this potential was realised. But continued government money, and the continued economic well

Ethnicity is a prominent feature in Nigeria's socioeconomic environment and is fervently exhibited within the context of the 'indigene-settler dichotomy'. As this encourages exclusivism, it has been a major factor responsible for violent conflicts across the country. While many urban spaces in the country have witnessed such conflicts, a few have not. This study examines the indigene-settler interrelations in Enugu to determine why and how the city sustained ethnic coexistence, cooperation and harmony since the end of the civil war (1967-1970). It demonstrates how, while ethnic attachment appeared to be strong, and while conflicts and occasional tensions did occur in the city, inter-ethnic relationships were cordial and symbiotic. It further identifies and interrogates cogent factors responsible for this trend. The paper argues that the constructive
