- Equity, diversity...
As part of a global community, AIA is building a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to build a better future for everyone. We’re moving justice and equity decisively from aspiration to action.
From aspiration to action
The architecture profession must be as diverse as the world we serve. Achieving this vision has a direct impact on the relevance of our profession and the world's prosperity, health, and future. Learn how AIA is building a profession and an organization of belonging inclusive of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, marital status, age, personal appearance, sexual orientation, family responsibilities, political affiliation, physical or mental disability, or veteran status and beyond.
Racial, ethnic, and gender equity
AIA is working to create meaningful, lasting change, from dismantling barriers in AIA systems to expanding inclusiveness and diversity in the profession to increasing participation of racially and ethnically diverse populations, women, and other underrepresented groups. This work starts from within AIA and extends to our profession, the broader design community, and the communities we serve.
Women in architecture
Women in architecture and design are a dynamic and influential segment in the profession, but when looking at leadership roles we also ask—where are they? AIA is working to empower women and break down barriers that get in their way through leadership development opportunities, career resources, and a highly engaged peer network.
Leadership education
Creating opportunities for others to lead and succeed is just as important as creating opportunities for our own professional growth. AIA’s leadership education portfolio includes Women’s Leadership Summit, an event that sells out annually; Next to Lead, a first-of-its-kind program to develop AIA leaders; AIA Leadership Summit, an annual event for chapter leaders; and Women’s Leadership Edge, a premier resource in partnership with University of California Hastings’ Center for Worklife Law.
Higher Education
AIA provides direct support and engagement to organizations, students, faculty and staff that recruit, educate, mentor, and retain the next generation of architecture.
K-12 Pathway Initiative
AIA is committed to helping cultivate the next generation of designers and leaders and ensure future generations of architects and design professionals are inspired, prepared, and diverse. Our K-12 Pathway Initiative provide activities and resources to encourage future architects and problem-solvers.
“Statistically speaking, women don’t highlight their brilliance or their accomplishments at the same level as men. We want to develop fearless leaders who recognize their talent and knowledge and have the confidence to share it and show it.”
Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE, AIA EVP/Chief Executive Officer
