Cathay Pacific releases traffic figures for December 2024

Cathay Pacific today released its traffic figures for December 2024. In the full year of 2024, the Cathay Group achieved new post-pandemic highs for total passengers and cargo carried. Cathay Pacific and HK Express carried a combined total of more than 28 million passengers, marking an increase of 30.7% year on year. Meanwhile, Cathay Cargo carried a total of 1.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, which was 11% higher than the whole of 2023.

Challenge Group signs with AERCAP for two converted 777-300ERSF, the ‘Big Twins’

Building on its 2024 success, Challenge Group announced last week, in a Press conference, the leasing of two additional Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters from AERCAP, becoming the first operator in Europe to introduce this aircraft type. Known as the “Big Twins,” these aircraft are unique as they are passenger-to-freighter conversions, offering greater cargo capacity and improved fuel efficiency.
Continued growth at St. Louis downtown airport in 2024

2024 marked another milestone year at St. Louis Downtown Airport. The general aviation airport experienced positive trends in flight operations and tenant expansions that are nearing completion. Vienna Airport ended the year 2024 with new record figures for air cargo volumes: A total of 297,945 tons of cargo were handled, which represents a significant increase of 22% compared to the previous year and plus 5% compared to the pre-crisis year 2019. In particular, the positive development of long-haul services boosted the cargo results at the airport, as there was strong demand for the additional belly capacities in passenger aircrafts. With a total of 4,238 tons in 2024, the airport also achieved a new all-time high in pharma handling (up 15.3 %).
“BelugaXL” as a guest at Munich Airport

In the first five weeks of this year, the giant freighter named “Beluga” will be a regular guest at Munich Airport. BelugaXL is based on the Airbus A330-200F. It owes its name to its whale-like appearance. The Beluga mainly transports aircraft components between the various Airbus sites.

Global air cargo spot prices remain more than +20% up on their levels a year ago, despite their usual seasonal drop in early January, according to the latest figures and analysis by WorldACD Market Data. Relatively high rates from the Asia Pacific and the Middle East & South Asia (MESA) origins continued to prop up average prices in the second week of 2025 (week 2, from 6 to 12 January).
