88 Miles Per Hour

If I were to, say, kindly offer Moses (he of the Exodus) a ride in my wonderful DeLorean, only to rev it up to 88 miles per hour and bring him to our time, what aspect of the modern world would shock him — and, more interestingly, what would not?

Technology would be a shocker, of course — everything from iPhones to airplanes, through high-rises, elevators, and cars (well, cars maybe a little less — he’d just been in my DeLorean).

Democracy and healthcare might baffle Moses.

Kings, dictators, warlords? Not so much.

Being highly intelligent — he did rise, after all, to become leader of Israel — I’m fairly certain Moses would peruse Netflix and the like quite a bit, shrewdly realizing that these seemingly innocent shows offered him a fast-track view of our way of life.

And as soon as Moses began to peel back the technological rind, he’d find that the juicy flesh underneath was rather familiar. The basic tenets — commandments — of morality have remained unchanged.
