Are the AOCD and AOBD the same? The answer is no.

The AOCD is the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. The AOCD provides continuing medical education for osteopathic board certified dermatologist. The AOCD offers AOA Category 1A credits and AMA PRN Category 1 credits. The AOCD is accredited by the AOA and ACCME to provide continuing medical education hours for board certified dermatologist nationwide. AOCD’s home office is in Kirksville, MO.

The AOBD is the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology. The AOBD is the organization you would contact for certification/recertification, Osteopathic Continuous Certification, exam registration/preparation, board policies, sub-specialty certification (Mohs, Pediatric Dermatology) etc. The AOBD is governed by the AOA with an office in the AOA building in Chicago, IL.

How many continuing medical education hours are required for the 2022 – 2024 CME Cycle? AOA CME GUIDE

Time-limited diplomates: 60 CME hours over 3 years; 20 must be category 1A CME and 20 must be specialty specific.

Non-time-limited diplomates voluntarily participating in OCC: 60 CME credits over 3 years; 20 must be category 1A CME and 20 must be specialty specific.

Non-time-limited diplomates not participating in OCC: 120 CME hours over 3 years; 20 must be category 1A CME and 20 must be specialty specific.

How do I know if I have a time-limited certificate? If you became board certified after 2004, then you have a time-limited certification.

Who does the AOCD report CME hours to?

The AOCD reports all CME hours obtained at an AOCD meeting or through the Learning Management System to the AOA. If you received CME hours from another entity (i.e., AAD or State Society) then you would need to report those CME hours to the AOA. Here is a link for self-reporting CME Self Report CME to AOA

Who do I contact at the AOA when I have a certification and/or CME hours question?

You should call (312) 202-8000 between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm CT, M-F), choose option 3, then select specialty. The caller will be connected with a LIVE customer service representative. You can also email the AOA at cme@osteopathic.org

What is the difference between AOA CME Credits and AMA PRN CME Credits?

Category 1: Osteopathic CME
Category 2: Non-Osteopathic CME
Category A: Live Activity

CME Activity Descriptions

How many continuing medical education hours are required for ABD certification? Each year, you are responsible for attesting to having earned a minimum of 25 hours of Category 1 CME. Half of the credits must be within the physician’s specialty area or practice. These hours should be accumulated in dermatologic education, but hours directly related to your type of practice is primarily a hospital-based consultation practice. Ethics, office management, and physician-patient relations are appropriate subjects for CME, but are not considered specialty-specific education. ABD CME Requirements

Can I go to AOCD meetings if I am ABD certified? Yes!!
The AOCD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide AMA PRA Category 1 Credits continuing medical education for physicians. Upcoming AOCD Meetings

Am I required to be an AOA member? The answer is no.

Does CE Tracker report my hours to the AOA, ABD, State or CE Broker? The answer is no.

CE Tracker is an AOCD membership benefit. CE Tracker is a database used to keep your CME hours organized and easily accessible. You may download your CME report and use it to send to the AOA for OCC tracking purposes.

When do I need to begin collecting CME hours after my residency?

Newly board-certified physicians or physicians reactivating board certification will have their CME requirement prorated for the current Certification CME cycle.

Initial certification: When physicians first become certified, their CME requirement will be prorated for the current certification CME cycle only. Prorations are based on the date of certification.

Reactivated certification: When a physician reactivates an expired/inactive certification, their CME requirement will be prorated based on the amount of time the certification was inactive.
