About

FIRST@108 is an award designed to offer Sculptors an opportunity to extend their practice into competing for public art commissions. The RBS is pleased to unveil the winning work in the Sculpture Forecourt and celebrate Jenske Dijkhuis' achievement as the recipient of the FIRST@108 Public Art Award 2010. Exploring both physical and imagined definitions of space, Dijkhuis' installations challenge the way we claim and interact with our environment. ‘The Horizon Pavilion is an attempt to invoke the open, tranquil, Dutch flatland in the busy city of London. Entering the pavilion through a doorway, one enters a corridor-like structure of open metal frames which twist and widen to towards a large window. The large reflective surfaces of the window obscure most of the street view leaving just a narrow horizontal strip. The mirrors above and below this reflect the sky and give the illusion of a wide Dutch horizon: just water, land and cloudy sky.' ‘Winning this prize has been a real journey and a thrilling experience, enabling me to see my ideas come to life with the professional support of engineers, artists and fabricators. It is wonderful to have the resources to build this design not just for myself but for the public to experience and hopefully enjoy.' Jenske Dijkhuis, August 2011. www.jenskedijkhuis.nl
