The Designation Scheme recognises cultural collections of outstanding importance held in non-national museums, libraries and archives across England. They are located all over the country from Cornwall to Cumbria.

There are over 160 Designated Collections in England that are held in a range of local authority, military, university, and independent organisations.

Designated collections cover a broad range of subjects from Natural History to Literature, Sports, Theatre, Economics, Fine Art, Social History, Transport, and Medicine. The collections and cover many different topics and time periods. They demonstrate eclectic tastes and intellectual journeys, the emergence of disciplines and theories, and the careers of our famous figures.
