Last week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by Ranger Shannon McLucas, Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine, to talk about the festivities for Baltimore's oldest continuously celebrated holiday (since 1815), Defenders' Day, Friday, September 13-Sunday, September 15. Defenders' Day Weekend commemorates Defenders' Day, Baltimore's oldest holiday, which honors the successful defense of the city from British attack and the writing of the National Anthem in 1814 and celebrated continuously since 1815! This year highlights Baltimore's history as a port city and its strength and unity during the War of 1812, the United States' second war for independence! Visitors are invited to also explore the arts and culture of Baltimore's modern communities.
Highlights include a Parade through Locust Point on Friday evening, Living History with the Fort McHenry Guard, Chesapeake Independent Blues, Ship's Company, & the U.S. Marine Corps Historical Company Saturday and Sunday and a FREE Saturday evening program with musical performances by the U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers' Chorus followed by fireworks with musical underscore!
