Baltimore weather: Heat holds through weekend (original) (raw)

A hot summer weekend is expected across the Baltimore region, with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s Saturday before remaining in the low 90s Sunday.

While a brief round of showers and thunderstorms could interrupt the forecast Saturday night, much of the weekend looks dry and favorable for outdoor activities.

Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch, with highs reaching the mid-90s under increasing clouds. A developing west wind could gust above 20 mph at times during the afternoon, but the breeze is unlikely to provide much relief from the heat.

Combined with strong June sunshine, temperatures may feel especially intense during the middle and late afternoon hours. Residents attending outdoor events, youth sports, festivals or other activities may want to limit prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Despite the increasing cloud cover, much of Saturday should remain dry. The best chance for rain arrives after sunset, when scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few storms could bring brief downpours, gusty winds and lightning before gradually diminishing overnight. Temperatures are expected to remain unusually warm Saturday night, with lows only falling into the low 70s.

Sunshine quickly returns Sunday as the weak disturbance moves away from the region. High temperatures are forecast to reach the low 90s, making it another hot day across central Maryland. A light west wind and somewhat lower humidity levels may make conditions feel slightly more comfortable than Saturday, though it will still be well above average for this time of year.

Clear skies Sunday night may allow temperatures to dip into the upper 60s.

The start of the workweek should bring a modest break from the extreme heat. Sunny skies are expected Monday with highs settling into the mid-80s, while comfortable overnight temperatures return to the lower 60s.

Warm summer weather is expected to continue Tuesday, with highs approaching the upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.

The next chance for more widespread showers and thunderstorms could arrive by Wednesday afternoon and Thursday as temperatures climb back toward 90 degrees and humidity begins to increase once again.
