Chris Roemer: What a Democratic victory in November will mean for America | COMMENTARY (original) (raw)

Until Elon Musk purchased Twitter (now X), the company’s policies — or at least how those policies were enforced — tilted reliably in favor of progressives and progressive ideology.

Actually, internal Twitter documents released by Musk after he bought the company suggest it was far more than just a tilt.

Twitter took extraordinary steps to silence conservative voices on a host of issues.

In an ideal world, progressives would have howled about how wrong that was, but progressives were the beneficiaries of Twitter’s malfeasance, so the company’s censorship was seen as acceptable, even desirable.

Hating on conservatives is fine, but saying something unkind about progressive ideology, individuals or groups is another matter altogether.

But X is not the only outlet available to progressives to vent their hate.

During a recent Politicon podcast, Democratic strategist James Carville made it clear just how potent the hate on the left remains, even implying that progressives should be proud of their hate.

According to Yahoo News, “Carville responded to accusations he suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome by saying, ‘You’re right! I got Trump Derangement Syndrome — I hate the motherf***er. And you know what? I don’t want to get rid of it. I don’t want to get better, I want to get worse. I want to hate him more. I pray to God in heaven.'”

While Carville’s hate is on display for all to see, the truth is, “hate speech” is most often in the eye of the beholder. It’s a pretty nebulous term that can mean almost anything depending on who’s defining it. There are obvious examples on both the right and left, but there is a whole range of speech that some might find offensive, but which really isn’t “hate speech” at all.

Until its purchase, progressives at Twitter got to decide what was hate and what wasn’t. They no longer have that luxury.

For decades, the left was accustomed to getting its way, if not through legislative means then through the judiciary.

Democrats have held majorities in the House of Representatives for 68 of the 95 years since 1931. They held continuous control of the House for 40 years from 1955 to 1995.

Since 1931, Democrats have controlled the Senate for 58 years.

The liberal Warren and Burger courts dominated American jurisprudence from 1953 to 1986. During that time, I don’t recall Democrats talking about the need to reform the Supreme Court.

It’s only when the court is not ruling the way they want that Democrats think reforming the court is an absolute necessity.

It’s happening today, and it’s happened before.

When he became president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, frustrated that the court was standing in the way of his attempt to implement large pieces of his New Deal, asked Congress to increase the number of justices from 9 to 15.

His plan was extremely controversial and ultimately failed in Congress. Even many Democrats opposed it because they feared it threatened judicial independence.

Today’s Democrats are unbothered by such mundane concepts as judicial independence. All they want is what they want, regardless of the long-term consequences for the country.

Although Roosevelt’s court-packing scheme failed, by the time he left office, it was a moot point in that Roosevelt had largely reshaped the court without changing its size, appointing eight of the nine sitting justices, resulting in a Supreme Court that was much more accepting of federal economic regulation and New Deal-style government programs, helping establish the constitutional framework that persisted for decades afterward.

By the time President Donald Trump came to power, Democrats had moved beyond legislative and judicial dominance to attacking the English language itself. “Wokeism” had been born, and the left learned how they could use language as a weapon against their political opponents.

Trump would have none of it, and unaccustomed to not getting their way, Democrats freaked out, and they continue to melt down to this day.

Perhaps Trump’s greatest gift to the American people was to give them the courage to stand up and openly reject the progressive bilge the left had been spewing for decades.

Trump took on the colleges and universities, shining a light on the indoctrination factories they had become, and holding them accountable for the contemptible claptrap they sold for years, charging a staggering sum for the privilege.

Under Trump’s leadership, America stopped its decades-long drift to the left. Working men and women abandoned the Democratic Party in large numbers. As a result, the party increasingly fell under the sway of the lunatic left.

Today, after years of dominating American politics, the left just doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that they can’t get everything they want anymore, so hate and emotion have replaced logic and thoughtful dialogue.

Recently, at a New Jersey ICE detention facility, an agitator bit two officers, one on the forearm and one on the knuckles.

That’s nice. I’m sure the officers had it coming to them.

If you consider yourself a moderate Democrat, you need to understand that by voting for any Democratic candidate, you are enabling these kinds of nuts.

By voting for Democratic candidates, you are making it possible for the left to reopen the borders and hinder the deportation of illegal immigrants, including the murderers and rapist among them, who are often released into local communities. The news is full of the evil deeds these folks commit when they are back on the streets.

Anyone voting for a Democrat is saying they want higher taxes, coddled criminals and private enterprise destroyed.

Democratic candidates know these policies are politically toxic, so they run as moderates but govern as progressives. They lie to get into office and only show their true colors once in power.

Think Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

It’s also why Democrats work ceaselessly to whip the American people into a frenzy of hate and conflict. They know Americans won’t vote for their policies, so they’re left hoping Americans will vote against a “fascist” like Trump.

Independents and moderates in both parties have a decision to make. Will they allow themselves to be manipulated by the left and vote into power candidates who are sure to implement policies with which they are certain to disagree, or will they vote to protect the American people from the utter disaster that is sure to follow a Democratic victory come November?

We’ll know soon enough.
