Documentary series following the dedicated fraud fighters pursuing the criminals who steal billions of pounds a year from the public purse.

In this episode, the Environment Agency discovers toxic waste being dumped illegally in a quarry south of Bristol. The waste risks contaminating the local water supply, meaning a potential £15 billion bill for taxpayers. The alarm is raised when an inspector visits the landfill site and finds huge amounts of waste that the site is not permitted to handle.

After a detailed investigation, they discover that the owner of the site is taking in large amounts of potentially hazardous waste from all over the country. He doesn’t have the right permits and is not paying any of the landfill tax that should be due on this type of waste. It’s a massive hit to the public purse.

In our second case, a hospital surgeon and prolific TikToker forges his own payslips to defraud the NHS out of £28,000. He’d been working for years as a locum in a hospital and was claiming from his agency for many more hours than he’d actually worked. He used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle – something he was happy to flaunt to his followers on TikTok.
