Ali Carter wins first title since cancer all-clear (original) (raw)

Ali Carter has won his first professional title since successfully battling cancer by beating Shaun Murphy in the Paul Hunter Classic.

Carter, who was given the all-clear from lung cancer in December, beat Murphy 4-3 in the final in Germany.

The 36-year-old said: "Can't believe I've won again after everything I've been through. Special."

Carter was diagnosed with a tumour on his lung last summer, having already recovered from testicular cancer.

The Essex player, who also suffers from Crohn's disease, has climbed four places in the world rankings to 25th after his victory, worth £18,200.

The tournament is named after snooker player Paul Hunter, who died after a battle with cancer in October 2006., external
