Exeter City 0-1 Port Vale (original) (raw)

Port Vale's rise away from the foot of the League Two table continued with a 1-0 win at high-flying Exeter.

In-form Tom Pope got the only goal in the 25th minute when he turned in from 10 yards from David Worrall's cross, for his seventh strike in as many games.

It was no more than Vale deserved as they created the better chances throughout, while below-par Exeter struggled in atrocious conditions as the strong winds of Storm Brian made life difficult.

Exeter did have the ball in the net in the second half, when Reuben Reid's effort was disallowed by the referee.

But Vale could have increased their lead when Worrall completely missed his kick when well placed in the centre of the penalty box before Tyrone Barnett skied high with another good chance.

Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym made a good save to deny Barnett, while Jayden Stockley thought he had won his side a penalty in injury time when he was tripped inside the box, but nothing was given.

It was a third straight win for Vale, under new manager Neil Aspin, while Exeter drop to fourth after their third game without a victory.
