Queen of the South 1-2 Partick Thistle (original) (raw)
Conor Sammon scored a goal in each half as Partick Thistle battled past Queen of the South to reach the Scottish Cup fifth round.
Sammon gave the struggling Scottish Premiership visitors the lead with a first-half effort.
Ross Fergusson levelled after the break for Queens when Niall Keown's attempted clearance ricocheted off the striker into the net.
Sammon struck the decisive goal with a late deflected effort.
Queens boss Gary Naysmith: "I am proud of the players. I thought we edged the game and it is disappointing we didn't get at least a draw. I thought we had the better chances and we limited Partick to very few.
"At 1-1 it could have gone either way but credit to the players - they battled and fought right to the end and it was one of our better performances of the last five or six weeks.
"But it is worse when you play well and lose. When you deserve at least a draw, it is frustrating."
Partick manager Alan Archibald: "We knew it was going to be tough. It was like an old-fashioned cup tie - end to end, lots of chances - and we are delighted to get through.
"We said to the players beforehand, 'Don't be the team that gets tripped up today' because a lot of people were tipping us to go out.
"We were a bit sloppy at the start of the second half and let Queens back into it, so I am delighted to get over the line and delighted for Conor [Sammon] getting two goals.
"He took his form from before the winter break into today and he was a handful all day. Callum Booth also got his first 90 minutes for nearly six months, as did Abdul Osman, so it is nice to have some choices in selection again."
