Brentford 0-1 Huddersfield Town: Karlan grant extends Terriers' unbeaten run to seven games (original) (raw)

Huddersfield Town's resurgence under new manager Danny Cowley continued as they overcame Brentford to stretch their unbeaten run to seven games.

Karlan Grant broke the deadlock after an hour as the Huddersfield frontman fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after good work from Fraizer Campbell and Danny Simpson.

Grant almost turned provider late on when he drove down the left and cut the ball back to Adama Diakhaby, but his effort was inches wide of the post.

Brentford came closest to scoring when Kamil Grabara palmed away Julian Jeanvier's powerful header in the second half.

Huddersfield have now collected 15 points in nine games under Cowley and moved from the bottom of the Championship up to 18th place, four points above the relegation zone.

Brentford, who had won three in a row, slipped back to 13th place as a result of the loss.

A disjointed first half produced few chances, although Brentford shaded the proceedings as Christian Norgaard had two efforts, while Said Benrahma went close with a powerful shot.

At the other end, Grant's powerful low effort forced an excellent save from David Raya after half an hour.

Benrahma had more chances after the break but Brentford could not find a way past Grabara, who kept just his second clean sheet of the season.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

"They wanted to play for a 0-0 and make a goal on the counter or a set piece and you could say in a pragmatic world that their game plan worked, but if we had got the first goal it would have been a totally different game.

"The referee has not helped us, but having said that he wasn't the reason we lost the game.

"Refs must be much stronger in dealing with some of the elements of disrupting play that we see. I'm not saying that we will never do that, but you have to ask what kind of game we want.

"Huddersfield defended well and some of our players were not at their top level in terms of decision-making, but now we have to start another unbeaten run."

Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I thought the players were immense in their attitude and application.

"We set out to out run, out work and out fight what was a very good Brentford team and I think we were able to do that.

"We had to make sure that we played in a way that would disrupt their rhythm and fluency. They were never able to get in their passing patterns.

"We are pleased with how it's gone so far, I don't think I would ever be arrogant enough to think I could just come to the Championship and do that.

"It might feel like we are on a really good run but it has felt like a lot of hard work getting to this point."
