In August 1988 the first pupils to take the new GCSE examination were about to get their results.

Newsround reporter Roger Finn visited Gateacre Comprehensive School in Liverpool to speak to teachers and students about how they had found the new qualification, which replaced O level and CSE.

For the first time, coursework formed part of many of the subjects marking and pupils were being taught differently to reflect the changes to the exams.
