On the track, Eilish counts down the ways that a boy she likes won’t reciprocate her feelings, saying she ultimately hopes that his lack of interest is towards her entire gender, not just her specifically. “I can’t tell you how much I wish I didn’t wanna stay,” she sings, “I just kinda wish you were gay.”
As a part of her new campaign for the single, Eilish also announced via press release that for the next 48 hours, a portion of all proceeds from her BLOHSH apparel line will be donated to The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide and crisis prevention program for at-risk LGBTQ youth.

In a video released with the new track, Eilish explained that the playful title and concept for the track is meant specifically as a coping mechanism for her, not as an indictment of the other person. “I wish you were gay to spare my pride,” she said of the song’s lyrics. “To give your lack of interest in me an explanation.”
“Wish You Were Gay” is the newest single off of Eilish’s highly anticipated debut full-length album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The new album is set to drop March 29, as Eilish returns from her European tour to perform two sets at this year’s Coachella.
