Gil Kaufman (he/him) is a longtime Billboard contributor. After helping to build the first commercial internet music news site (Addicted to Noise) in the mid-1990s, he spent 16 years as a senior writer/editor/producer and live event photographer at MTV News before joining Billboard in 2016 as a full-time freelance editor/writer. Since then he has written nearly 10,000 headlines spanning breaking news, concert reports, awards shows, TV/movies, profiles, features and interviews, with a focus on mental health, politics, addiction, world affairs and researched stories making connections between entertainment and major news events. His expertise and deep knowledge of genres including pop, rock, punk, hip-hop, folk and electronic music has also made him one of Billboard’s go-to obituary writers. After writing the definitive oral history of disgraced 1990s group Milli Vanilli for Billboard in 2020, he appeared as an expert in the award-winning 2023 ‘Milli Vanilli’ documentary.
