While visiting Japan, Lieutenant Pinkerton (Cary Grant) lusts after and marries a geisha (Sylvia Sydney) named Cho-Cho San after discovering how easy it is to get divorced. After he happily sails back home, his new wife longingly waits for his return. Despite leaving her dishonored and ignoring endless messages, Pinkerton musters up the courage to return to Japan to confront his wife after three long years.
