Philip Sutherland, a foreign correspondent based in Russia, falls in love with Marya Lamarkina, a lovely ballerina. They marry and Marya applies for an exit visa so they can return to the United States together. But Cold War politics intervene and she is detained in Russia by the KGB while Philip is escorted home. Months pass and Philip, who has tried every official channel, devises a desperate plan to return to Russia for his bride.
