For a movie called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth and presumably not-last entry in the venerable Disney franchise (based on a popular theme park attraction and, in the case of this entry, an unremarkable Tim Powers novel too), could have stood to be a whole lot weirder. To explain: the last two installments in the Pirates franchise, directed back-to-back by canny stylist Gore Verbinski (2006's Dead Man's Chest and the following year's At World's End), were large, overstuffed spectacles with far too many meandering plot threads and far too little narrative cohesion. ...read more...
