When his mother dies, Bob Beuhler (James Garner) inherits a house, land and custody of his schizophrenic younger brother, DJ (James Woods). Reluctant to take responsibility, Bob faces the most difficult challenge of his life as he tries to fulfill the promise he made to his mother 30 years earlier and look after DJ now that she's gone.
