Between 1989 and 1999, he worked as assistant director on almost 30 films, including Royal Tramp (1992), Truant Heroes (1992), God of Gamblers Return (1994), The Storm Riders (1998) and A Man Called Hero (999). Yip directed his first film for Wong Jing�s Workshop in 1996. Sixty Million Dollar Man, starring Stephen Chow, Ng Mang-tat and GiGi Leung, grossed over HK$35 million. His 1998 work Portland Street Blues garnered the Best Actress award for Sandra Ng and Best Supporting Actress Award for Shu Qi.
