Advait Chandan, the director of Loveyapa, which releases this Friday, has worked with Aamir Khan Productions (AKP) all his life before serving as Aamir Khan’s manager. Loveyapa marks his first outing which is not produced by AKP. It is backed by AGS Entertainment and Phantom. Advait spoke about this aspect and his bond with Aamir Khan in an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama.

When asked about stepping out of AKP, he said, “Initially, I felt a bit strange and I missed AKP as I was used to their style of working. But then, stepping out of the comfort zone is important. It enhances your confidence. It’s good to feel nervous. Secondly, I met Srishti Behl, who’s the producer of this film. She has been an amazing support system and a partner. I know I am going to have a lifelong connection with her.”
Aamir Khan is known for giving valuable inputs. Did he share any important tips for Loveyapa? Advait replied, “Oh yes. Even if I direct a sabun tel waali ad, I reach out to him to get his feedback. Just like Munna Bhai hallucinates about Gandhiji, I hallucinate about Aamir sir. He has taught me a lot about editing, the pacing of the scene, sound mixing etc. When I am working on the edit, I keep hearing his voice, ‘Aye, background score ko dialogue se zyada loud mat rakhna, dialogue should be louder than BGM’!”
Advait Chandan’s earlier film Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) bombed at the box office but later on got a lot of love. It is common to read ‘I am sorry Aamir sir’ comments on the songs on YouTube as many regretted not seeing it in cinemas. It’s the trend of re-releases and hence, will he like Laal Singh Chaddha to re-release? Maybe, it might get its due this time.
Advait Chandan, however, explained, “I can’t tell. What will happen, no one knows. Even then, I didn’t know about the fate of the film. The only thing I know is that we have to make a film with a lot of sincerity, love and hard work. If a film works with the audience, I’ll be happy. If they don’t like it, I’ll accept it as well.”
Aamir Khan was the chief guest at _Loveyapa_’s trailer launch, and he joked “Advait is someone I am really close to. Sometimes, I feel that he’s like my son. But sometimes, I feel that he wants to destroy me”. But that also made it clear that they both have an incredible bond.
Advait Chandan revealed, “Everything that I have today – career, understanding of the craft etc – is because of him. And since I have worked with him for so long, I also enjoy trolling him! In fact, I am his biggest troll. He doesn’t like to be surrounded by ‘Yes men’. Hence, he appreciates my trolling.”
