Boston Police Blotter: Climate protesters arrested after blocking busy Back Bay street (original) (raw)
Five climate protesters were arrested Monday after bringing morning traffic to a standstill in Back Bay, Boston Police said.
Officers responded to St. James Avenue and Dartmouth Street around 7:44 a.m. and saw several individuals and a pink sedan parked in the roadway outside a hotel, according to BPD.
The protesters allegedly formed a chain that obstructed the street by having their hands interlocked in a tub inside barrels and linking arms with each other.
“Officers made several attempts to disperse the protesters and reopen the street to the increasingly inconvenienced commuters who were at a standstill,” the department said in a statement. “Several of the protesters complied with officers’ requests to move to the sidewalk, with the exception of the individuals who were connected to the barrels.”
Eventually, two of the protesters moved to the vehicle parked in the street and placed their hands in tubs welded to the car, police said.
“With assistance from the Boston Fire Department, officers began the process of releasing the protesters from their respective contraptions,” BPD said, that’s when another protester allegedly interfered with the process and placed herself between the other protesters and the firefighters and police.
Police arrested Laura Honeywood, 45, of West Roxbury, Anna Pancoast, 39, of Arlington, Juliane Manitz, 41, of Chelsea, Jamie McGonagill, 34, of Gainesville, Florida, and Meryl Brott, 57, of Allston.
All the protesters face charges of unlawful assembly, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Pancoast also faces an additional count of wrongful interference with the operation of a school bus.
They are expected to be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court.
