Prince Hal, fictional character, based on the English monarch, who first appears in William Shakespeare’s play Henry IV, Part 1, where he is portrayed as an irresponsible, fun-loving youth. In Shakespeare’s Henry V he proves to be a wise, capable, and responsible king and wins a great victory over the French at Agincourt.
