We are at a time in history when mindfulness research is rapidly expanding, and mindfulness has become a highly accessed form of support for whole health in many countries, including the United States. There is great need for methodologically rigorous research to help determine whether reported impacts of mindfulness on health are fad or fact. The Mindfulness Center at Brown University leads initiatives in this area. Our researchers include experts from medicine, public health, and humanities to examine mindfulness from all angles.

The Mindfulness Center has strategically fostered key areas of research and innovation across faculty and is considered a leader in Health Equity, Mental Health, Mobile Health, Cardiometabolic Health, Implementation Science, and Adverse Events and Trauma Sensitivity.

Several mindfulness professional development programs are offered through the School of Professional Studies. Training includes MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) teacher training certificate pathways, mindfulness classes for individuals, and mindfulness training through affiliates and strategic partnerships. Training happens on-site, live on-line, and in person.

Dissemination

The center maintains an e-mail newsletter of more than 18K members, alongside an X account, that provides regular evidence-based information on research discoveries and educational opportunities, including at Brown University.

Publications

Center faculty have published several books that are being disseminated widely and translated into several languages:

Dr. Judson Brewer, director of research and innovation at the Mindfulness Center at the Brown University School of Public Health, shares strategies for staying calm during contentious times.

Brown University researchers take a deep dive into the barriers that are disincentivizing health insurers from covering the mindfulness–based health program.

NCCIH funding will allow Brown researchers to evaluate complementary and integrative health interventions and produce a public-facing database to support rigorous systematic reviews.

Mindfulness Programming

In collaboration with the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, the School of Professional Studies offers a variety of evidence-based mindfulness programs and resources for beginners, teachers in training and those who are certified, as well as custom programs for organizations.
