White Mountain Trail Byway

Visit the White Mountain Trail Byway to get the best views of the New Hampshire White Mountains. The drive takes a couple of hours at 100 miles, or you can spend a week, especially in the winter for skiing. With rugged scenery through three mountain passes and views of lush landscapes, including Mount Washington. The trail winds through major sections of the White Mountain National Forest, ready to offer relaxation, exploration, and wildlife discovery. Find your own personal oasis in New England with this byway as your guide.

North Wood stock starts the journey heading north over the mountains before rounding down over in North Conway. While the Kancamagus Scenic Byway goes under the White Mountains, this byway goes over the top for a completely new view of the mountains and Northern New Hampshire. Take a tour of the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves. Spend an afternoon at Clark’s Trading Post and another at the Whale’s Tale Water Park with the family before trailing the Mountains.

Up north, veering just off the path in the town of Franconia. It’s also home to the Old Man of the Mountain and Museum, although they face has now fallen off the mountain. Even with the face gone, the town keeps the mountain in great shape with tons to see, including historical memorabilia. Franconia also offers the Franconia Notch State Park with beautiful streams, Echo Lake, and the Flume Gorge. Take out on a paddleboat or a canoe and enjoy nature.

You can also experience Cannon Mountain, with a 4,080-foot peak perfect for rock and ice climbing. If you would rather stick to the trails and meander around the mountain. History buffs can visit Robert Frost’s historical farmhouse where he wrote his famous poems. Stay at the Horse and Hounds Inn modeled after a traditional English Country Club.

Next, follow the byway to Bretton Woods by the Ammonoosuc River used for trout fishing by the Twin Mountains. The river offers some waterfalls and cascades along with covered bridges ready to delight your senses. In town, you can find gondola rides, golf, carriage rides, tennis, disc golf, mountain biking, and wall climbing.

Move east toward the towns of Bartlett and Glen with more rocky gorges with cascading waterfalls. It’s the place for incredible photos and fantastic swimming locations. Take the kids to Story Land, a fairytale amusement park. After a day a the park, check out Ripley Falls at the Crawford Notch State Park.

Finish your trip in North Conway with tons of opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Go tubing down the Saco River or find some peace at The Soaking Pot. Finally, make sure to visit Diana’s Baths with waterfalls and a short trail or take a scenic train ride on the railroad. No matter where you go on this incredible trail, find your haven and find some calm in your life.
