The North Star State

Despite the popular dad joke, this state was not named for a small canned soft drink. Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” this state’s name came from the Dakota name for the Minnesota River.

This name translates to either “clear blue water” or “cloudy water,” depending on the inflection. That seems like quite the appropriate name considering the sheer number of lakes and rivers within the state. Anyone looking for a scenic drive will find themselves in heaven when driving through this gorgeous state, there are plenty of gorgeous riversides to drive by, as well as lovely waterfalls that you can explore and take pictures of along the way.

Minnesota has been inhabited since the 11th century BCE and gained its name from one group of indigenous people to live in the area, before colonization by French explorers and missionaries. Like many of the squared-off states in the United States, this state was part of the Louisiana Purchase and became the 32nd state to enter the union in 1858.

A quick look at this state’s natural topography will make it clear why its main exports were timber, agriculture, and railway lines. If you’re looking to do more than just visit this state, you wouldn’t be the only one, as Minnesota has one of the highest standards of living in the United States, and is home to some of the best-educated citizens in the whole nation.
