Split Images of Thor, Static, and Superman

Comic books are full to the brim with electricity-powered superheroes. From storm gods to scientific experiments gone wrong, characters who use lightning as their main attack have been a mainstay of comic books for nearly a century. Many of these lightning-wielders are villains, but as many use their shocking powers in the fight for good.

In addition to characters whose whole power set revolves around lightning, many heroes with totally different ability sets participate in the electricity extravaganza. Even iconic characters like Superman and Spider-Man have had incarnations with the ability to conjure lightning in their campaigns against evil.

Updated on September 2, 2024 by Scoot Allan: Like other elements such as fire and water, electricity allows for very interesting power sets, but electricity-based superheroes tend to be widely ignored. This list has been updated to include more information about the best electrically powered superheroes and to conform to current CBR standards.

Marvel heroes are known for being wholesome and protective, but there are a few of them like Wolverine and Punisher who have amassed huge kill counts.

As one of Marvel's oldest characters, it's not surprising that some of his powers have changed over the many years he's been in publication. Namor the Sub-Mariner is not just an Atlantean/human hybrid but also a powerful mutant. He has the ability to not only breathe underwater but also fly through the air.

However, Namor shared some of his incredible abilities with other undersea creatures. While it's not a powerset that is seen often in modern versions of the character, Namor used to be able to generate his own bio-electricity to deliver a shocking electric sting when needed. He could even absorb other forms of electricity to use himself or transfer his energy to others as needed. Unfortunately, this ability and a few others have been retconned over the years, though they could always return with a new writer.

He can use it to tap into the abilities of all living creatures and replicate them, which makes him a surprisingly powerful hero.

Animal Man can tap into the strength of a gorilla or fly like a bird. He can even replicate the abilities of an electric eel to deliver a powerful blast of electrical energy. X-Force: Forge's From The Ashes Team, Explained

X-Force is relaunching for the X-Men's "From the Ashes" event, with the roster of the deadly mutant team featuring several familiar and new faces.

Surge was a mutant who ran away from home when her electrical abilities first manifested. She made her way from Japan to New York, where she was taken in by the X-Men and trained to use her powers. Surge can absorb and release electricity as powerful electric bolts at her foes.

Surge's ability to absorb electrical energy from simple static created by friction to larger power sources made her powers hard to control. Surge was one of the few mutants who retained her powers after the events of House of M, which led to her leadership role with the New X-Men. While she spent some years away from the battlefield, she recently joined Forge's new team of X-Force in the From the Ashes relaunch.

She was initially worshiped as a weather goddess, but she left that life behind to join the X-Men. Over the years, Storm has been more than just a member of the team. She has been one of their most important leaders and remains one of the most respected mutants in the Marvel universe.

10 Best DC Villains You've Never Heard Of

While everyone knows DC villains like Joker and Lex Luthor, more obscure villains like the Condiment King and Wotan haven't made as big of a splash.

Jefferson Pierce was DC's first Black superhero to have his own comic title. Black Lightning has recently grown in popularity, partly thanks to the character's critically acclaimed Arrowverse TV series. First introduced in 1977, Black Lightning lasted just 11 issues. Originally a teacher, Black Lightning was promoted to principal in the 1990s.

In both positions, Pierce worked in a school located in Metropolis' Suicide Slum. Unlike most of DC's heroes. Black Lightning's stories focus on more realistic issues like drugs and gangs. He originally gained incredible electrical abilities from his costume, though he later gained the power of electrokinesis, which he shared differently with his daughters, Thunder and Lightning.

After his body was drained of solar energy, he began to develop a new energy form. He began to wear a blue and white containment suit that allowed him to use his new electrical abilities.

This version of Superman could use his electrical abilities to tap into magnetic forces, and his new energy form allowed him to alter his density. He could absorb and rechannel energy into powerful electrical blasts and even fly along electrical currents. "Electric Blue" Superman was short-lived, and he returned to his original power set after his energy form was temporarily split into Superman Blue and Superman Red.

2 Thor Is The True Master Over All Lightning

Thor Odinson Controls the God Tempest And the Odinforce as One Of Marvel's Most Powerful Heroes

Thor is a powerful Asgardian and the child of Mother Earth, and the cosmic Phoenix Force further empowered him. He is both the God of Thunder and the Asgardian God of Strength. Mjolnir contained the powerful God Tempest, which gave Thor the ability to manipulate weather and channel his lightning-based attacks through the hammer

1 Static's Control Over His Powers Makes Him Deadly

Virgil Hawkins' Brilliant Mind Also Helps Him Use His Incredible Powers More Creatively

First Appearance: Static (Vol. 1) #1
Creative Team: Dwayne McDuffie, Robert L. Washington III, John Paul Leon, Steve Mitchell, Noelle Giddings, Steve Haynie
Impressive Feats: Easily Blasts Through Walls Of Metal

Created to be Milestone Comics' answer to Spider-Man, Static has continued to shine as one of the most interesting comic book characters with one of the best costume designs from the Dakotaverse. Virgil Hawkins gained his electromagnetic powers after being hit with tear gas mixed with an experimental mutagen during Dakota City's "Big Bang."

While the Milestone books lasted just four years, Static proved too popular to be shelved. He joined the Teen Titans and received several short-lived series before the Milestone Returns initiative. The character also had his own animated series called Static Shock and appeared in Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice episodes.
