After avoiding the Iron Man armor for months, Tony Stark finally felt like he had no choice after another attack from Obadiah Stane took the life of a close friend of his. Rather than asking his friend Rhodes for his old armor back, Tony instead chose to build an entirely new suit. This new armor took on a red-and-silver design instead of his usual red-and-gold and signaled a new era for Iron Man.

Whether they received popularity from the MCU or they've always been fan favorites, everyone knows the names of Marvel's most popular characters.

The Silver Centurion armor came with numerous new upgrades and weapons, making it the best Iron Man armor of its era. This suit featured the addition of both the pulse bolts that could deal more damage the further they traveled and a special "chameleon effect" that made him invisible for a time. Stark used this armor to demolish Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger suit, but it places last because it's far from Stark's best armor.

24 The Model 9 "New Red and Gold Armor" Was Designed To Help Tony Finish the Armor Wars

Tony's time in the red-and-silver didn't last long, as within just a few issues, he had to build yet another suit of armor. This "Neo-Classic" armor was originally just a project Stark conceptualized but had no intention of following through with. However, after Firepower demolished the Silver Centurion suit, he was forced to finish the Neo-Classic Suit so he could defend himself and Stark Enterprises.

In this new suit, Stark made short work of Firepower but initially considered the suit so powerful he thought he needed to destroy it. Still, he decided against it for the sake of continuing to operate as a superhero. Stark continued to work with versions of this suit until eventually taking a huge step forward with the modular armor in Iron Man #300.

23 The Model 13 "Modular Armor" Could Be Customized To Fit Any Situation

First Appearance: Iron Man #300 (November 1993) by Len Kaminski, Kevin Hopgood, Steve Mitchell, Ariane Lenshoek and Ken Lopez

Certainly, the modular armor is one of Stark's more iconic looks, thanks to its appearance in the '90s Iron Man cartoon and the video games. However, it was also by far the most powerful suit he'd ever created up to that point. When the suit debuted, he used it to save a number of his friends who had also suited up in their attempt to take down the technological giant, Ultimo.

Iron Man's modular armor consisted of many components, which made it easier to store and assemble. This might easily have been one of his best scientific upgrades, as the modular armor featured several additional module plugins that could join the armor at any time. He even designed a new Hulkbuster suit that worked with his modular armor.

22 Iron Man's Variable Threat Response Battle Suit Would Become War Machine

When Tony Stark faced the deadly Masters of Silence, he was shocked that their advanced weaponry could severely damage his Iron Man armor. He upgraded his suit with even more armor and stocked it with more weaponry than any suit he had created before.

The Mark 11 was also known as the Variable Threat Response Battle Suit, though his close friend James "Rhodey" Rhodes coined it the War Machine. After Stark used the armor to defeat the Masters of Silence, he gave the suit to Rhodey, who began his career as War Machine. While the suit has obvious ornaments, it also includes hidden weaponry and advanced targeting systems to really stand out in Tony Stark's armory.

21 The Model 16 "Renaissance" Armor Is Still One of the Most Recognizable

First Appearance: Iron Man Vol. 3 #1 (February 1998) by Kurt Busiek, Sean Chen, Eric Cannon, Liquid!, Richard Starkings, Comicraft, Dave Lanphear

The Model 16 was the first suit Stark created after returning from the alternate universe created by Franklin Richards. It represented another return to basics for Iron Man, resembling a futuristic version of his Classic Armor. Easily one of his best-designed suits visually, he had to make minor changes to the suit after only wearing it a few times because the suit's power systems were too intense for his body.

Marvel has no shortage of powerful characters, but when it comes down to the strongest superheroes, their reputations precede them.

Nonetheless, the Renaissance Armor was packed with powerful weapons to help him against ever-growing enemies. He retained his classic pulse bolts in addition to his repulsors and unibeams but also added special sonic beam weaponry. The suits advanced cybernetics even became sentient, which is what forced him to give up the armor.

20 The Model Nil Helped Stark Sneak Around While Dealing With Feilong

First Appearance: Invincible Iron Man Vol. 5 #7 Gerry Duggan, Juan Frigeri, Bryan Valenza and Joe Caramagna

Iron Man's stealth armors are somewhat understated in terms of power, but the Model Nil stands out quite a bit in that respect. Originally, Stark only intended to use it while he finished work on a different suit. However, during Iron Man's battles with Feilong, he found himself relying on the Model Nil after losing access to all of his other armor.

Fortunately, the Model Nil is still a pretty impressive suit of armor. On top of allowing him to be nearly invisible to both people and technology, it contains an array of weaponry to help him make a quick getaway. Stark only stopped using this suit after he built the Mysterium armor.

19 The Model 13 "Hulkbuster Armor" Is Designed For Battles With a Certain Jade Giant

First Appearance: Iron Man #304 (March 1994) by Len Kaminski, Kevin Hopgood, Steve Mitchell, Ariane Lenshoek and Phil Felix

The famous Hulkbuster armor impressed viewers when it appeared in live-action on the big screen in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the comics, Tony Stark pulled out the Hulkbuster armor after the Hulk attempted to shut down a plant that had been making gamma bombs. Without realizing it, Tony had acquired the same plant.

Tony and the Hulk came to blows over the plant, requiring Tony to construct armor that could match the Hulk’s strength. Since then, the Hulk has grown even stronger, so Stark has had to keep beefing up the Hulkbuster over the years. That said, though they were mostly even in Tony's first encounter wearing the Hulkbuster armor, Hulk hasn't lost to Tony in subsequent encounters.

18 The Model 44 Heavy Duty Armor Was an Upgraded Modular War Machine

First Appearance: Iron Man #4 (December 2012) by Kieron Gillen, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Guru-eFX and Joe Caramagna

When Tony Stark returned to Earth after spending some time in space, he refocused on forming the Avengers and revamping his own tech with powerful Repulsor Tech cores. His gold and black Model 42 armor was an upgraded version of his modular armor designed to help him test experimental new technology, including new armor.

After AIM stole his technology, Iron Man debuted a powerful new Heavy-Duty Armor that dwarfed his first War Machine armor. He outfitted it with as much modern weaponry as he could fit, which made the suit the same size as some of his Hulkbuster variants but with much more firepower.

17 The Model 48 "Cold Iron" Armor Is Meant To Do Battle With the Dark Elves

First Appearance: Iron Man Vol. 5 #24 by Kieron Gillen, Luke Ross, Guru-eFX Joe Caramagna

The "Cold Iron" armor is a reminder that when Stark creates armor specifically to counter a single opponent, it can prove effective. After getting frustrated with the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, Stark designed a suit made entirely of cold iron to retrieve an item from their realm. Though the elves initially attempted to stop Stark, once they realized how well-equipped he was, they quickly ran away.

The rare Iron Man suit is made of actual iron, and Stark designed the cold iron suit's weaponry specifically to deal with dark elves. He can fire clouds made of iron filaments and can slash through opponents with the suit's giant claws. Though elves are weak to old forms of technology, leave it to Tony to find a way to make any warfare futuristic.

16 The Model 29 "Extremis Armor" Made Tony One With His Armor

First Appearance: Iron Man #4 (August 2005) by Warren Ellis, Adi Granov and Randy Gentile

The enhanced terrorist known as Mallen damaged Tony Stark’s armor during their first encounter. The battle highlighted the limitations of his current technology, as he simply wasn't fast enough to keep up with Mallen's response time. To make up for this, Stark used the experimental Extremis nanotech that powered Mallen to upgrade himself as well.
