Thanos Returns to Quest for the Infinity Stones in Infinity Watch Crossover (original) (raw)

The centerpiece of one of the most famous Marvel storylines of all-time, Infinity Gauntlet, which later led to the highest-grossing superhero blockbuster films ever (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame), was the quest of Thanos for the Infinity Stones to put together the Infinity Gauntlet (they were actually called Infinity Gems originally, but after the Marvel Cinematic Universe adopted the term stones, the comics have followed suit), and now Thanos is trying to collect the Stones once more in the upcoming Infinity Watch crossover coming this summer.

The multi-issue event will be organized by writer Derek Landy, who will write the first two parts himself, and the crossover will take place in this year's Marvel Annuals (a throwback to past Marvel Summer Annual crossovers like Atlantis Attacks and The Evolutionary War), and will culminate with a brand-new Infinity Watch being formed to guard the Infinity Stones. A new Death Infinity Stone will be introduced, and the bearer of this stone will be revealed in Thanos Annual #1, which kicks off the event. Landy and superstar artist Sara Pichelli will draw back-up stories in each annual featuring the mysterious being who will be possessing the Death Stone.

What was the Infinity Watch?

At the end of the original Infinity Gauntlet crossover back in 1991, the Infinity Gauntlet was in the control of Adam Warlock, who had previously been the holder of the Mind Stone. Warlock knew that he couldn't continue wielding the Gauntlet himself, so he decided to spilt the Stones up again, and this time entrust each Stone to one of Warlock's friends to protect, and keep from ever being used to form the Gauntlet again. That group was called the Infinity Watch, and Warlock and the Infinity Watch was an ongoing series written by Infinity Gauntlet writer, Jim Starlin, for a few years in the early 1990s.

There have been a number of protectors/owners of the Infinity Stone since then, most famously being Star, the superbeing introduced during Kelly Thompson's Captain Marvel run who merged with the Reality Stone. Now these Stone wielders will be in danger, as Thanos is trying to once again unite the Stones.

"INFINITY WATCH" PART THREE!

Faced with the menace of Utgard and a prophecy of his own doom, the son of Odin sought out the legendary Power Stone to aid his fight. Only two things were in his way. Firstly, the mighty Champion of the Universe – with strength to match Thor's own – was also questing for the stone. Secondly, the Stone is now inside a person – the Prince of Power! PLUS, Derek Landy and Sara Pichelli continue the journey of the Death Stone Bearer and the scar it will leave on the universe!

Landy was asked about how he was feeling about being in charge of a crossover like this, and he explained, “When you write for Marvel it's all you can hope for to add your thread to the massive tapestry of stories that has been unfolding since 1961. To be asked, then, to spearhead this next chapter is a prospect beyond my paltry imagination. I get to work on characters I've never written before — Thanos! Hulk! — and drag them into the story beside the new generation of heroes like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Boy. Thankfully, there is absolutely no pressure because comic fans are a notoriously easy-going bunch who are prepared to forgive if—oh dear God.”

Thanos Annual #1 is due out June 26, kicking off the whole crossover (the next two parts follow on July 3 and July 17, respectively).
