Inside Out 2 New Character

Pixar’s highly-anticipated Inside Out 2 movie has received two brand-new clips, teasing the dynamic between Amy Poehler’s Joy and Maya Hawke’s Anxiety. The latter will be introduced as one of Riley’s newest emotions in the upcoming sequel.

Shared by Rotten Tomatoes on YouTube, the Inside Out 2 clips give highlights to Anxiety’s major role in the headquarters. Even though she initially shows her admiration for Joy, Anxiety fails to agree with Joy regarding decisions about Riley’s future. With the help of Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui, Anxiety is expected to take over the headquarters from Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust in an attempt to help Riley get through high school. This marks Hawke’s second voice acting role to date, following her guest-starring role in an episode for 2023’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur series. She will next be seen reprising her fan-favorite role as Robin Buckley in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

It will be a while before the highly anticipated Pixar sequel is available in digital formats.

According to director Kelsey Mann, Hawke’s Zoom audition for the role instantly made him realize that she was the perfect one to voice the key character. "She absolutely crushed it. And my favorite part was, you know, at the end of it, I talked about what I wanted the movie to be about, and she just immediately connected with it," he recalled. "I think I even cried as she was talking. And I walked away and, you know, called you [Mark], and we’re like, 'Oh my God, she’s perfect.' And then I went back into the EPCOT and continued my vacation. It was hilarious."

Inside Out 2 serves as Mann’s feature-length directorial debut, after over a decade of being part of Pixar’s creative team. Besides Poehler and Hawke, the film will also feature the voices of Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment, Tony Hale as Fear, Liza Lapira as Disgust, Diane Lane as Mrs. Anderson, Kyle MacLachlan as Mr. Anderson, and Paula Pell as Mom’s Anger. Ahead of its impending theatrical release, the sequel is now on track to receive a huge domestic gross of around 80to80 to 80to115 million during its opening weekend.

Inside Out 2 Will Introduce New Aspects to Riley’s Mind

Besides adding new emotions, Inside Out 2 will also be introducing some cool new aspects to Riley’s mind, as she enters a new stage of her life. In a previous interview, Mann and co-writer Dave Holstein opened up about their decision to explore Riley’s Belief System in the sequel. "It was just gorgeous," Holstein said. "And it made me feel something. It soon became a core element of Inside Out 2. Immediately, I was like, 'There’s something I want to see at the beginning of this movie, and possibly the end of this movie, that tells me what the movie is.' So it was very inspirational for me."

Inside Out 2 debuts in theaters on June 14.
