Why Choose Columbia College for Your Master’s in Social Work?

What Students Are Saying

Columbia College has been inclusive and supportive during my time as a student. They have worked around my deployment and training schedules in the Army, with special considerations for the various time zones I have traveled to. If CC can make these efforts for a person like me, they are the right place for anyone.

You’ll have two distinct pathways to earn your Master of Social Work, depending on your prior education and experience.

Specializations

All Master of Social Work students, whether in the Traditional or Advanced Standing pathway, choose one of two specializations to tailor their degree to their career goals:

Advanced Clinical Practice Organizational Leadership and Change
Develop advanced skills for direct practice with individuals, families, and groups. You may also focus your studies on military social work, gaining specialized expertise to support service members, veterans, and their families. Prepare for leadership and administrative roles in social service agencies. Learn to manage programs, lead teams, and advocate for effective policy and organizational change.

Practicum

The MSW practicum is a cornerstone of social work education, providing essential hands-on experience where classroom theory meets real-world application. This supervised field experience is vital for developing professional competencies and a deeper understanding of social work practice. All MSW students at Columbia College are expected to complete practicum education as a fundamental component of their degree program.

Practicum experiences allow students to build professional networks, develop critical thinking abilities under supervision, and integrate academic knowledge with practical skills. This experiential learning is fundamental to becoming an effective, ethical social work practitioner prepared to serve diverse communities.

How It Works:
Once accepted and enrolled in the Master of Social Work program, the MSW Practicum Director will reach out to discuss opportunities, including the possibility of completing practicum at your current place of employment under certain conditions. The initial point of contact from the MSW Practicum Director may vary depending on whether you are a part-time or traditional student. Graduate Practicum is a year-long course during your generalist and specialization years in the MSW program. Traditional students will have two practicum experiences while advanced standing students will have one. Students will receive more details once accepted into the program.

Accreditation

Logo of the CSWE Accreditation

The Columbia College Master of Social Work program is currently in candidacy for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Columbia College received candidacy status in October 2025. Students who are admitted to pre-candidacy or candidacy programs will be retroactively recognized as graduates from a CSWE accredited program as long as the program attains initial accreditation. Being a graduate of an accredited social work program is needed for licensure in all states. Some states require attainment of full accreditation prior to student graduation in order to sit for the licensure exam. Please check the current list of states where students may be admitted and enrolled in courses. Accreditation is a 3-year process and attaining pre-candidacy or candidacy does not guarantee that a program will attain initial accreditation. For more information about social work accreditation, contact CSWE's Department of Social Work Accreditation.
