10-Men Mariners Dominate in Tough Derby Loss (original) (raw)

Despite two first half injuries and a second half send off, the Central Coast Mariners fought until the final whistle, only to be handed a bitter defeat by two late Newcastle Jets goals.

The run down

The loss also comes at a price for the Mariners who will now be without Josh Rose (suspension) and Andrew Hoole (suspension) whilst Connor Pain & Wout Brama remain under an injury cloud as a result of their first half injuries. Danny De Silva, Trent Buhagiar & Tom Glover are all still unavailable due to national team duties ahead of next Sunday’s home match against Melbourne City.

It was an open first half in Newcastle which provided acres of space for the Mariners’ Dutchman Wout Brama and Tom Hiariej to work their magic. Ultimately, Tom Hiariej went on to claim man-of-the-match honours for his heroic output.

Looked like a great turn out of @CCMariners fans at the game tonight. A huge credit to anyone who travelled with hail and storms predicted. You could see the boys react to that support on the field despite the result #CCM #F3Derby

The Yellow & Navy took the game to Newcastle away from home and had the better of the chances in the opening 45, unlucky not to take an early lead on multiple occasions.

The wide men in Kwabena Appiah and Connor Pain caused absolute havoc for the Jets’ defence, bombing down the wing time and time again to create a raft of chances.

In the 14th minute, Pain delivered his first dangerous cross of the night that looked like it was right on the money for Blake Powell and Appiah in the box but a sliding Nigel Boogaard just did enough to clear.

For the rest of the half, the Mariners’ relentless attacks on the flanks continued but the Yellow & Navy just couldn’t find the finishing touch to get it in the back of the net.

McGing, Hoole & Powell also played their part in the Mariners’ front third which gave the away team all the momentum in the first half.

@CCMariners @paolojnr well played tonight boys!!! Deserved more. Unlucky with injuries, scheduling and some great saves by Moss. Keep it up! #CCMFC #F3Derby #NEWvCCM

Unfortunately for the Mariners, Paul Okon was forced to make two first half substitutions with Connor Pain & Wout Brama both limping to the sideline after the 40-minute mark to make way for Lachie Wales and Jacob Melling.

Down on troops, the Mariners went into the break boasting the best of the chances but it remained 0-0 at half time.

As the second half whistle blew, the Mariners kicked off the way they ended the first, with an assault on the Jets’ goal. Straight from the kick-off the Mariners lodged an attack that saw Hoole back heel to Wales but it was just defended by Newcastle.

One minute later, the Mariners looked certain to capitlaise on their domination when Appiah broke down the wing and whipped in a perfect ball. Powell did everything right and fired his shot, but Moss made a freakish save on his line to keep it at 0-0.

Appiah continued his energetic performance on the wing and in replacement for Pain, Wales created a number of chances on the left.

Then, in the 57th minute, Mariners’ fans were on their feet when the back of the net rattled. Hoole’s precision corner hit the head of a leaping Powell but the effort found only side netting.

In the 72nd minute, man-of-the-match Hiariej tried to take the game in his own hands with a lethal strike from distance but it was straight into the chest of Moss.

Sucks so bad to lose but the boys should hold their heads high. They gave everything for the Yellow and Navy tonight. Proud of the boys. @CCMariners forever.

A minute later, Josh Rose was shown his second yellow card of the night, the Mariners would finish the match with 10 men and the high paced nature of the game came to a screaming halt.

But even with a one-man deficit, the Mariners kept taking the game to Newcastle and had their chances to take the lead.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Jets went ahead against the run of play through Dimi Petratos and ensured their three points with a goal to Argentinian, Pato Rodriguez.

Goals

82’ PETRATOS (1-0): Steven Ugarkovic crossed into the box for Joseph Champness which evaded him and fell to Petratos who finished from point blank range.

92’ RODRIGUEZ (2-0): A defensive mix up saw the ball fall to Rodriguez in a dangerous position. All he had to do was bury his one-on-one opportunity which he did, giving Ben Kennedy no chance to make a save.

Paolo in the press

“It was total domination from the Mariners from the first moment up until that incident [red card]. Even then when we went down to 10 men we had chances to score. It’s disappointing that the derby ended the way it did. For us, totally unjustified and that decision ruined the match.

“Both yellows, the first yellow isn’t a yellow – it’s a foul on Josh Rose. Champness backs into him and all he does is move him away. Did we see Rodriguez’ tackle on Jake McGing, the two-footer on half way – no yellow card.

“We don’t finish our chances and if we don’t finish them off the opposition stays in the game. We should have gone into the break a goal ahead. In the second half we had the wind in our backs and Newcastle couldn’t get out – there was really only one team who looked like they were going to win at that stage.

There it is… 3 DAYS turn around resulting in our first two soft tissue injuries in the game. Both hamstring…

Unfortunate scheduling and decisions… 2 Away games ?

Great support by the fans and if we are allowed to finish with 11, I bet we don’t lose.

See you in 5 days..

“Going into this game we knew it was going to be difficult. We had a long trip to Geelong, the cards we were dealt coming into this derby were certainly not in our favour and the effort from the players was admirable. We did everything we could do to prepare as best as we could and we lose certainly Connor and probably even Wout for our next game and we’ve got three boys in China, Andrew Hoole is suspended.

“We broght Jacob in, who came on and did exceptionally well. We’re down to the bones at the moment. We won’t make a point of it, Sunday is another big game, an opportunity at home against Melbourne City so we will put out a team that we will have full confidence in.

“I haven’t been coaching for too long but this is probably the proudest I’ve been of a team. We’ve had it tough of late. We haven’t been able to score, maybe confidence is not helping us. To go down to Melbourne Victory to get a point and to come here tonight and totally dominate Newcastle in an #F3Derby and play the way we did takes a lot of bravery. It’s not the result we feel we deserve but in the end, a decision goes against us and costs us points here tonight,” Okon said.
