WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Pamela Barker as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio in a 91 to 5 vote. She’ll fill a Cleveland vacancy created when Donald Nugent took senior status.

Both of Ohio’s U.S. Senators endorsed Barker for the job, and the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously signed off on her nomination in February. A statement from Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown said she’d “bring the right combination of experience, commitment and talent to the job.”

“Her time presiding over the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas has prepared her to hit the ground running and honorably serve the people of Ohio," said a statement from Republican Sen. Rob Portman. "She has the necessary experience and sound judgment to be a great federal judge and will make Ohio proud in this new role.”

Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich appointed Barker to the Common Pleas Court in 2011, and she was subsequently re-elected. Before that, she worked mainly as a civil attorney, including a stint as in-house counsel for Progressive Insurance and worked as a magistrate in Brecksville. She grew up in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood and lives in Bay Village.

During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Barker said she strives for consistency in sentencing, and loves writing opinions.

“I never go into a situation pre-deciding the issues,” Barker told the committee.
