Last year Scottish comedian Janey Godley was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her response was to go on a punishing stand up tour, Not Dead Yet.
Janey grew up dirt poor in Glasgow, she was sexually abused by her uncle, and her alcoholic mother was murdered. Aged seventeen Janey married into a notorious gangster family. She ran a pub with her husband, until his brothers muscled in. Janey escaped by becoming a stand-up comedian, feted as the female Billy Connolly.
Janey famously greeted Trump at Turnberry with the sign "Trump is a cunt", celebrated by Dolly Parton in World On Fire: "Janey got a sign to carry in the fight". During the pandemic, she conquered social media by re-voicing First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's briefings. Then she was cancelled. when decade-old tweets showed Janey being implicitly racist. She apologised and built back her career, then the cancer hit.
This fly on the wall documentary tells her story and tours Scotland with Janey, her friend Shirley and daughter, comedian Ashley Storrie. We see her with Nicola Sturgeon, Jimmy Carr and winning the first Billy Connolly Award, her tour culminating at the 3,000 seat Glasgow SEC.
