Murder mystery novelist Andrew Dax is up against a deadline, so his wife Kate arranges for them to hire a country cottage and get away from all distractions.

Arriving late after suffering a breakdown, the couple have barely sat down before hearing an insistent knocking at the door, and the entry of Millicent Tulip. Her own car having broken down directly outside the property, and scared after apparently receiving a string of threatening letters, she plays on the Dax's sense of kindly hospitality for the night.

Come morning, however, Kate is horrified to discover Miss Tulip dead in their living room - and not simply dead, but murdered. When the police arrive, they're quick to apportion blame, and it's heading straight in Andrew's direction.
