Sir Charlie Chaplin was an English actor, comedian, writer, director, producer and composer who began his career as a music hall entertainer before travelling to the US with the Fred Karno company. There, he found significant, international success as an early silent film star, usually playing his comic "Tramp" character. He worked at various film studios throughout his career, eventually forming United Artists with a number of other stars of the day.
