Fagin's gang encounter Henry Fox Talbot with his new invention - a camera! Dodger manages to steal the camera and take it back to the lair. Fagin is delighted as they can use it to distract people when they are posing and then steal from them.
Dodger's best mate Charley is increasingly uncomfortable about their risky new way of life. She decides to leave, but falls into the hands of the riverside-dwelling mudlarks, a gang of kids who are set to work collecting all the things the filthy River Thames washes up.
Charley is sent on a dangerous mission by Lucifer, a frightening figure with a mysterious love of gold, who takes particular notice of Charley because of her strong country lungs.
