The Graham Norton Show - Series 12, Episode 6 - Jake Gyllenhaal, Joan Rivers, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Ke$ha - British Comedy Guide (original) (raw)
Further details
Jake Gyllenhaal, talking about his new movie End of Watch says, "It took me to South Central, one of the most dangerous parts of Los Angeles. I grew up in LA but had never been there. We prepared with police officers and got to ride along with them three or four nights a week for five months. We saw a lot of things on the streets."
Asked if the police were on their best behaviour because they had an Oscar nominee in the back of the car, he says, "At first they were. It was awkward but then they would have to deal with a very serious situation and everything goes back to normal."
Jake reveals just how seriously he took the preparation, "The police offered us the chance to either be pepper sprayed or tasered. We are actors and not the sharpest tools in the shed so we decided to go for quick and painful rather than long and painful. I was an idiot and there was no logical explanation why we did it but I think experiencing things does influence the realism in the movie. It felt terrible. They said they would do it for five seconds and I was screaming like a child pretty quickly. It felt like it was forever and it lasted a second and a half!"
Talking about his relationship with his sister Maggie, he says, "We celebrate each other's success but there was sibling rivalry and we were much more competitive than we are now. We are very supportive of each other. I see how hard it is to raise two children and maintain a professional career and that is more than I could every do so she wins. We are siblings and we fight but we love each other deeply."
Joan Rivers, talking about her fantastically successful career and longevity, says, "Isn't it fabulous at this age, but all my friends are dead so there is no one left to appreciate it!"
Talking about ageing she says, "It's very hard if you are attractive," and addressing Jeremy Clarkson and James May says, "You guys don't need to worry." Turning her attention to Jake, she says, "But you do need to worry," adding, "It's very hard for a woman to get older." Describing sex with an older man she says, "I always faked it but if you moan and groan in the wrong ear of an old man they don't hear it. It's such a waste."
Jeremy Clarkson and James May talk about the phenomenal success of Top Gear around the world and some of their more dangerous exploits while challenging Graham to take part in their show.
Ke$ha performs Die Young live in the studio.
