The Graham Norton Show - Series 13, Episode 11 - Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Katy B - British Comedy Guide (original) (raw)

The cast of Superman movie Man of Steel join Graham. Russell Crowe says Kate Blanchett is the best kisser, Henry Cavill reveals sex scenes aren't comfortable, Amy Adams talks about her passion for Lois Lane. Katy B performs live in the studio.

Graham, describing it as 'genius', reveals that Russell Crowe has tweeted the show his drink's order ahead of his arrival. Providing all the ingredients, Graham lets him mix his own favourite tipple.

Russell, asked why he is in a superhero movie after very publicly saying he would never do one, says, "They didn't ask me to be the dude they asked me to be the dad which is different. The character, and what he has to sacrifice as a father, is interesting.

"I have a six year old and nine year old and I have to be honest that came into play in making my decision so they could see one movie I did. Gladiator is way too violent and Les Misérables has prostitution. So they have never been able to see a film of mine and now they have. I'm hardly in it so when they did see it they said, 'What's the big deal?'"

Talking about his outfit for the movie he says, "I'd already said 'yes' to the movie when they told me I had to wear the same costume as Superman. I was like, 'whoa, whoa, whoa, Marlon Brando had a big white flowing kaftan with sparkles on it, get me one of those."

Russell says of his son Tennyson's appearance in Les Misérables, "He just really, really wanted to be involved. I did my first job when I was six so when he started zeroing in on it I thought, 'Why not?'"

Talking about the comparison made between Britney's bright blue Toxic air hostess outfit to his Javert uniform in Les Misérables on Twitter, he says, "A guy sent it to me it and I thought it was so funny I re-tweeted it. Then Britney Spears tweets me and says, 'Let's get together to do a song, a Toxic song mash-up,' I've no idea what it meant and I was like, 'It was just a joke love.'"

Asked which of the many women he has had sex scenes with is the best kisser, Russell says, "Currently the mantle is held by Kate Blanchett until further experiences."

Henry Cavill, talking about his new level of fame and how his life has changed since taking on the role of Superman, says, "There's no real preparation you can do for it. You can ask people but you don't know what it will be like until it happens to you. You just have to take it in your stride and enjoying it is the most important thing because this only ever happens once. And rolling with the punches if they come."

Talking about the huge amount of training that went into honing his body for the movie, he says, "I trained for nine months. I look nothing like that now. It's a Superman shape and great for playing Superman but not much else."

Russell interjects, "There were four of us on the same hellish contract. We actually had to sign a deal that we would only eat the food the studio supplied for about three and half months. That was a bit odd. You're sort of hungry all the time. At one point I was brought down to only 1800 calories a day."

Talking about being given a 'food amnesty' after his shirtless scenes, Henry says, "I had a whole apple pie, a tub of ice cream and a large pizza, followed by the best food coma of my life."

Reminded of the of sex scenes he did in The Tudors, Henry says "Normally when you're thinking about having sex with someone you are alone. When you're on set you've got at least 12 very heavily set men watching you and it's not comfortable. Things aren't happening as naturally as they should and it's not nearly as sexy as one may imagine."

Amy Adams, talking about her determination to get the role of Lois Lane, reveals, "I auditioned for three different movies. I really wanted to play Lois. I grew up watching superhero movies and I figured, as a mere mortal, the only way to be a super hero was to play one. I used to re-enact scenes with Barbie and Ken - my Lois and Clark really liked each other and went way further than in the movies!"

Revealing that her young daughter has a crush on Henry, Amy says, "She loves Henry and asks all the time, 'Where's Henry's super suit?' in this breathless three-year-old voice - it's very funny. She's going to kill me when she's older because I keep telling people. She came to the set and turned around and touched Henry's bum - she just reached her little hands out. And Henry turns to me and says, 'Like mother, like daughter!"

Talking about Enchanted and how a lot of children think of her as the princess, she says, "I loved it. It was fantastic. It's never been a burden but in life I tend to walk around without makeup and looking homeless and kids don't recognise me but their parents will. They tell the poor children that I am Giselle and they are really disenchanted. I have to say in a very Giselle voice, 'I'm in disguise.' They buy it."

Katy B performs What Love Is Made Of live in the studio, before joining Graham for a chat.

And finally, Graham, with more than a little help from Russell, pulls the lever on more foolhardy members of the audience brave enough to sit in the red chair.
