Charles and Carrie face humiliation when their names aren't printed on the Mansion House Ball attendance list in the newspaper. The mood is lightens when son William returns home from Manchester - and declares he is now to be known as Lupin. What's worse, he has lost his job.

Charles receives an insulting card in the run-up to Christmas, as well as a punch in the head while spending an evening with the Holloway Comedians.
