The Vicar Of Dibley Series 1, Episode 3 - Community Spirit - British Comedy Guide (original) (raw)
The time has come to organise Dibley's annual autumn fayre, and after raising a measly £200 last year, there are murmurs to support cancelling the event. The vicar however, is determined that she can book a real celebrity to open festivities rather than some local nobody, and a solution appears to come when Alice reveals her early-balding cousin is one 'Reg Dwight'...
Further details
The annual Dibley Autumn Fayre is fast approaching, and with Geraldine determined to raise more money than usual by booking a TV celebrity to open the event, David is angry not to be invited to do the honours as usual.
Preparations are quickly under way for the fundraising day, including Alice's very... creative idea of making soft toys from cooked pasta. Although Geraldine can't work out what any of the animals are supposed to be, Alice explains each with perfect ease. Meanwhile, sexual tensions between her and Hugo balloon as he seems to make a move on her - but both are too nervous to do anything about it.
At the vicarage, Geraldine is struggling to find someone she can invite to open the fayre. After only narrowly discounting the chiropodist daughter of a Beverly Sister, she's almost ready to admit defeat to David - until Alice casually mentions her balding musician cousin, Reg Dwight. Quick as a flash Geri puts 2 and 2 together and recalls it to be the birth name of a certain Elton John! Without further hesitation, Alice is ordered to get in touch with the cousin she hasn't seen for so many years.
On the day of the fayre, Alice's relative arrives to open the event. Unfortunately, he really is just a Reg Dwight! Panic ensues - and a smug grin crosses David's formerly annoyed face - but not for long: Kylie Minogue drops by in search of her good friend Elton, and agrees to open the ceremonies! The villagers celebrate; Geraldine is happy; and David is beaten once more.
