PLAYER RATINGS: Which Newcastle starter is not justifying their selection? And who scores 4/10 a... (original) (raw)

Bournemouth and Newcastle played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.

Bournemouth went in front in the 37th minute as Marcus Tavernier tapped home Antoine Semenyo's cross after the winger robbed Joelinton of possession.

Newcastle improved after the interval and drew level when Anthony Gordon poked home Harvey Barnes' inviting cross.

The home side believed they had a late winner when Dango Ouatarra found the net from a corner in stoppage time, but his effort was controversially ruled out by VAR as it was determined that the ball had gone in via his arm.

Mail Sport's CRAIG HOPE was on hand to rate the players from both teams.

BOURNEMOUTH

Neto 7.5 - A spectator for first hour before making flying save from Joelinton. Two more brilliant stops late on to protect point.

Julian Araujo 6 - Big header at 0-0 to clear from inside goalmouth and had done well until Barnes introduction, failing to stop winger’s cross for equaliser.

Illia Zabarnyi 6 - Defence became ragged as Newcastle enjoyed spell of pressure late on but he was there with some important headers.

Marcos Senesi 7 - Recovered from being given early runaround by Isak and made some crucial interventions, most notably a second-half goalmouth clearance.

Milos Kerkez 5 - Cost his side by switching off for equaliser and allowing Gordon to ghost in on shoulder.

Ryan Christie 7 - Busy and creative, he set tone for home improvement after slow start. Never shied away from wanting ball.

Lewis Cook 7 - A really solid display. Showed discipline in anchoring midfield and rarely wasted a pass. An outsider for England recognition, perhaps.

Antoine Semenyo 8 - Worried Newcastle all game. Cracked bar before winning possession and laying on opener for Tavernier. The sort of wideman Newcastle need. MOM.

Justin Kluivert 6.5 - Caused problems in No10 role and was clever by drifting into spaces Newcastle were not populating. Better final ball still needed.

Marcus Tavernier 7 - Goal typified his liveliness when stealing in to convert from close range.

Evanilson 6.5 - Supporters enjoyed his home debut. He was a willing runner and aggressive with it. Encouraging signs.

Substitutes

Alex Scott (for Christie 64) 5.5 - Bustled around midfield.

Luis Sinistera (for Evanilson 72) 5.5 - Denied a winner from fine shot when Pope saved.

Dango Ouattara (for Kluivert 72) 6 - Unlucky to miss out on late winner for handball, but ruling was probably correct.

Daniel Jebbison (on for Tavernier 86) N/A

NEWCASTLE

Nick Pope 7 - Big save at 0-0 but would have felt Bournemouth’s opener was coming, and he was left exposed for it. Strong stop late on from Sinistera. Newcastle are better for his presence.

Tino Livramento 5 - Picked again ahead of Trippier but not justifying that selection right now. Didn’t offer usual threat going forward and was not alert to danger in allowing Tavernier to run off him to score.

Tino Livramento started ahead of Kieran Trippier but couldn't complain when he was taken off

Emil Krafth 6 - Not the easiest game against Bournemouth’s livewire front four but stuck to his task.

Dan Burn 6.5 - A couple of big blocks as his team retreated after promising start. Was denied winner when header was clawed clear by Neto late on.

Lloyd Kelly 5.5 - Knew what was coming against former team-mate Semenyo but could do little to reduce threat of wideman. A difficult full debut.

Sean Longstaff 6 - Touch eluded him a couple of times when getting into good forward positions. Steady enough.

Bruno Guimaraes 6.5 - Brilliant start and fitness looked a level up from last week. Faded before coming into it again late on.

Bruno Guimaraes was Newcastle's standout midfielder on Sunday afternoon and was solid

Joelinton was brilliant last weekend against Southampton but had a difficult game this week

Joelinton 4 - Lost possession for Tavernier goal and mistake had been coming after earlier errors. So sloppy and ineffective compared to star-man showing on opening weekend.

Jacob Murphy 5 - His team needed more in terms of quality from a wide area. A willing runner, as ever, but team’s threat improved when he was replaced by Barnes.

Alexander Isak 7 - A menace early on, repeatedly breaking in behind backline. He terrified Bournemouth, but end product was not there. Kept at it and always looked likely to score.

Anthony Gordon 6.5 - Far from his best on the whole, but goal saved a point. Is this a post-Euros low or does he want a move to Liverpool after all? Either way, the team miss the incision he showed last season.

Harvey Barnes made a major impact when he came off the bench as he registered an assist

Substitutes

Kieran Trippier (on for Livramento 58) 6.5 - Team immediately improved for his experience and quality. Must stay in the side now.

Harvey Barnes (on for Murphy 58) 7.5 - Without him, Newcastle don’t take a point. Created the goal and looked fit and hungry.

Lewis Hall (on for Kelly 69) 6 - Very tidy and much improved on last weekend, when he lost the ball too often.

Joe Willock (on for Longstaff 69) 6 - Gave the team a forward drive they’d been missing from midfield.

Miguel Almiron (on for Gordon 89) - N/A
