Carabao Cup third round draw LIVE: Premier League heavyweights, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United, Man City,... (original) (raw)
Onto round three!
This blog was short but sweet.
The Carabao Cup has really delivered over the past couple of days, and now we know who will do battle in the third round.
My pick of the ties is Coventry vs Tottenham - I sense an upset.
We will have to wait another three weeks until the next round gets underway, though, with an International break coming before then.
Anyway, I am now going to shoot off, thanks for joining us here at Mail Sport. Dom and I have had the pleasure of bringing the information to you, as always.
Goodnight!
Sandro Tonali looks BETTER than before
Sandro Tonali made some comeback tonight, didn't he?
I didn't even expect him to start, let alone play as well as he did in the middle of the park for Newcastle.
Mail Sport's Craig Hope was at the City Ground to witness Newcastle qualify for the Carabao Cup third round, in which they will play Wimbledon.
They won't be thinking about that yet, though. It's all about tonight.
Read the match report, below:
Fan Reaction: 'Draw rigged'
Anonymous: The draw rigged before your very eyes. Absolute joke.
Anonymous: An utter disgrace, officials turning somersaults, and doing handstands to appease the golden boys. If it's too much for the poor darlings already with the biggest squads, spending power and money they should do the decent thing and opt-out...after all, they'll no doubt field weakened teams and moan about fixture congestion.
Howe: 'Shootouts are a lottery'
Eddie Howe, Newcastle boss, speaking to Sky Sports after Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest:
Shootouts are always a lottery, our lads dealt with that pressure really well and full credit to the lads keeping their composure.
We practiced [penalties] yesterday, it is something we always prioritise - I was hoping we wouldn't need it. We had a great start, but we lost our way and recovered in the second half.
We struggled with the ball at times and their shape was good and compact. We struggled to break them down and our off-the-ball shape wasn't as normal.
All Premier League ties
There are only three all-Premier League ties in round three, for some reason I thought there may be more.
As I have already said, holders Liverpool start their League Cup campaign at home to West Ham. I think this could be one of the best ties in the next round.
Their neighbours Everton also face fellow top-flight opposition as they host Southampton. That's a tie I find tough to call, could go either way.
Meanwhile, there will be a cracker down south as Brighton take on Wolves. For some reason, I just think this has goals written all over it.
Some great ties to tuck your teeth into.
Who will win the cup?
Yes, I know it's early days, but that doesn't mean we can't make predictions.
I want to hear from you, our audience.
Who will win the 2024-25 Carabao Cup?
My bet is that Arsenal will finally get their hands on silverware again under Mikel Arteta. They will be hoping it's not the only trophy they win.
Liverpool and Manchester City will of course be fighting for it too, but I think it's time for change.
De ja vu for holders
Carabao Cup holders Liverpool will start their defence at Anfield.
When the third round comes, it may feel like a little bit of de ja vu for them...
Last season, en route to beating Chelsea in the final, the Reds took on West Ham at home in the last eight.
They ran out 5-0 winners with Curtis Jones netting a brace on the day, he was on fire.
Well, if the Merseyside club want to win the trophy in back-to-back seasons, they'll have to get past the Hammers once more.
Third round draw in full...
Right, I think we should have a look at the draw in full, right?
Here are the Carabao Cup 2024-25 third-round fixtures:
- Liverpool vs West Ham
- Manchester City vs Watford
- Arsenal vs Bolton Wanderers
- Manchester United vs Barnsley
- Wycombe Wanderers vs Aston Villa
- Coventry City vs Tottenham
- Walsall vs Leicester City
- Brentford vs Leyton Orient
- Blackpool vs Sheffield Wednesday
- Preston vs Fulham
- Everton vs Southampton
- QPR vs Crystal Palace
- Stoke City vs Fleetwood Town
- Brighton vs Wolves
- Wimbledon vs Newcastle
- Chelsea vs Barrow
When will the third round take place?
Sadly, we have to wait another month for League Cup action.
The third round will take place across two weeks in September.
The first batch of fixtures commence from September 16, while the second lot start from the week beginning September 23.
There is a lot of football to be played before then, and certainly after. So, you'll probably forget that information by then.
Pick of the bunch?
And that's ya lot!
There are some cracking ties in there that I am looking forward to watching.
What are your favourites? I'll give you mine:
- Manchester United vs Barnsley
- Wimbledon vs Newcastle
- Coventry vs Tottenham
Chelsea vs Barrow
A fantastic draw for League Two Barrow.
Get the buses ready for London - a long way, mind.
Wimbledon vs Newcastle
Sorry, Sean...
Newcastle are away again.
Brighton vs Wolves
Ooooh, this is another tasty all-PL tie.
Stoke vs Fleetwood
Charlie Adam returns to his old stomping ground.
QPR vs Crystal Palace
Another London derby, west vs south.
Everton vs Southampton
An all-Premier League tie in Merseyside!
Preston vs Fulham
Blackpool vs Sheffield Wednesday
Brentford vs Leyton Orient
Walsall vs Leicester
Coventry City vs Tottenham
A famous FA Cup final repeat!
Wycombe vs Aston Villa
Man United vs Barnsley
Arsenal vs Bolton
Man City vs Watford
Unlucky, Watford.
I think I just heard a collective sigh in Hertfordshire.
Liverpool vs West Ham
Oooooo...
Last year's quarter-final will take place in the next round.
European qualifiers draws
So, it's a little more confusing this year.
The first six fixtures will include European teams due to fixture clashes, they can't face each other.
The first four, they are at home, the two after the European teams are away.
The draw is about to get underway.
Longstaff: 'A home tie would not go amiss'
Sean Longstaff, Newcastle midfielder, speaking to Sky Sports:
It is massive. There's no European football this year so the cup competitions will play a massive part in our season. We want to go as far as we can. A home tie would not go amiss! Fingers crossed.

Time for the draw
Dom, you are exactly right... what a night.
I have just zoomed over from the Newcastle coverage - which was dramatic - and am now ready for my favourite part of the night.
I love cup draws, they can be excellent viewing, especially when big ties are pulled out of the hat.
The European teams are in it now, a few of the lower-league sides will be hoping for them!
Quick change...
Phoar, what a night, eh?
Well, it's not over yet, but it is for me on this blog.
I am handing over to my colleague Harry Bamforth who will take you through the draw.
Let's hope for some interesting ties!
Breaking:NEWCASTLE INTO THE THIRD ROUND!
Wow.
Taiwo Awoniyi, with the chance to make it 4-3 skies his into the neighbouring solar system.
Sean Longstaff steps up to win it for the visitors....
And he does! Longstaff tucks into the bottom right to spark limbs among the visiting fans!
Magpies back level again!
Newcatle have levelled it!
Ibrahim Sangara slams Forest's fourth penalty into the crossbar and Newcastle are reprieved as Anthony Gordon converts his response to make it 3-3.
It's all happening here.
Advantage Forest!
It's first blood - well kind of - to Forest!
Joelinton steps up to take Newcastle's second penalty with the scores at 2-1, but Carlos Miguel throws all 6ft 8ins of his body to his right to keep the kick out!
Advantage Forest...
Follow the action from the City Ground below...
If you want to follow the action at the City Ground with penalties now on the cards, you can follow Mail Sport's coerage at the link below...
They're about to get underway with Newcastle taking first...
Penalties at the City Ground
So Newcastle and Nottingham Forest will be decided by pens, but we've already had some spot-kick drama.
Minnows AFC Wimbledon from League Two have sunk Ipswich on penalties!
Wimbledon won it 4-2, and the Tractor Boyos are out in shocking fashion!
Slight change to how we're doing things...
Well those of you in the know will know that it's not just the Champions League that's getting a revamp this term.
Granted, it's not exactly as glitzy a competition, but there's a new way of drawing the teams in the Carabao Cup for this season.
You can take a look at just how things have been shaken up ahead of the draw tonight...
Hammers leave it late
So, Ipswich have gone to penalties with Wimbledon, while Newcastle and Forest look set for a similar fate.
West Ham, though managed to get through in normal time, and you can re-live the action from the London Stadium below with KATHRYN BATTE'S report.
Penalties beckoning...
Right, so as it stands, we're on the verge of penalties at two of our games.
Newcastle are being held by Forest, while Ipswich's late equaliser has them heading for spot-kicks at Wimbledon.
Southampton have found a fifth - taking that game to eight in total with Cardiff?! - while Brentford and West Ham look set to join Wolves in the hat for the third round.
It's been a hectic second round so far...
So the powerhouses are coming into the competition from the third round, but we've had some brilliant action in the second this week.
We've seen AFC Wimbledon push Premier League new boys Ipswich to extra time as it stands, while Cardiff and Southampton have shared six goals and some 13 goals scored by Stoke, Brighton and Crystal Palace between them last night.
There's still a few minutes to go in most of the games tonight, and we'll be running through the action from those games as the results come through!
Hello!
Good evening everyone and welcome to Mail Sport's live coverage of the Carabao Cup Third Round!
It's the point at which the big boys all join the party, with the likes of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool entering the draw.
The draw itself is set to get underway from about 10.15pm, so stick with us as we build up to the action!
